Director of Engagement, Towson University Hillel
"Faster. Higher. Stronger"
Dear Ms. Barnes,
I am writing you with regards to your opening for a Director of Education at the Bolton Street Synagogue. Please allow me to take this opportunity to discuss my qualifications.
To begin, I graduated from Towson University in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management and a minor in Business. Currently, I am on track to earn my Master of Arts degree in Jewish Education from the Baltimore Hebrew Institute in May 2013. In addition to my studies, I function as the full-time Director of Engagement with Towson University Hillel, a position I have held since August 2011. As a Jewish communal professional working primarily with undergraduate students on campus, I am blessed with the opportunity to interact with so many different types of people every day. It is a true pleasure to work with and help them connect with their Jewish identity, while also being a part of the general campus community. This goal is accomplished through various avenues, including our Peer Network Engagement Internship (PNEI), a program which has been overhauled over the past year and has yielded unprecedented positive results for Jewish life at Towson University. Through our methods of tracking Jewish student involvement, the group of six interns I currently supervise have succeeded in engaging over 130 of their peers in Jewish life during the Fall 2012 semester alone. They have accomplished this through the planning and execution of two events per month for their own unique social networks. These events range from Shabbat dinners hosted in their residence facilities to volunteering with local homeless shelters in the Baltimore area. Moreover, the students are actively recruited to be a part of alternative winter and spring break immersive experiences, during which they dedicate part of their vacation to volunteer and community service work.
My work with Towson University Hillel has also allowed me to study trends within the young Jewish community that I believe would be hugely beneficial to a potential position as the Director of Education with the Bolton Street Synagogue. Through these experiences, I have discovered particular common threads among youth within the American Jewish community and I am excited about the potential possibility of utilizing this knowledge to enhance the Jewish youth education within the Bolton Street Synagogue family.
In addition to my aforementioned credentials, I would also like to draw your attention to my association with the Berman-Lipavsky Religious School at Beth El Congregation. As of this coming May, I will have spent the past three years employed as a teacher with this program. My focus has been educating children on the importance of Jewish values, history and Tanach through a combination of formal and informal teaching methods. Some of the techniques I have implemented in the classroom include the use of current pop music, videos and interactive games. I am of the belief that in order to effectively convey the information from the required curriculum to the students, an educator must find ways to relate the material to their daily lives. By doing so, it allows them to gain a true understanding of why they should consider something important enough to think about long after the session has ended.
Furthermore, along with my classroom responsibilities, I have spent the past six months assisting in the development of a weekly initiative for the brand new Sunday morning program, during which fifth and sixth graders are combined into one large group. The goal of this plan is to experiment with new “out of the classroom” teaching methods and encourage students to learn in a completely different way. It is something that remains a work in progress and a project that has really begun to come together, as of recently.
Finally, I would like to point out that, for two years, much of my time was also dedicated to various responsibilities as an inaugural resident at Moishe House Baltimore. This is a grassroots organization which seeks to engage young Jewish adults, aged 21-30, within the Baltimore region in various social, volunteer and educational programming. My housemates and I were responsible for the planning and marketing of five to six events per month aimed at our target demographic. Through the use of social media, weekly e-mails and word of mouth, we became one of the most successful hubs for the young adult Jewish community in Baltimore. This particular experience proved to be extremely valuable in discovering new outreach strategies, as well as learning how to deal with the challenges those working within the Jewish community face on a regular basis.
I hope that these experiences and qualifications present me as a viable candidate for this position. Please feel free to contact me at (443) 995-3713 or via e-mail at rub...@gmail.com. Thank you very much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Cordially,
Michael I. “Mickey” Rubin
