The USS Tarawa (LHA 1) was a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy that served from 1976 to 2009. The ship was named after the Battle of Tarawa, a fierce World War II battle that took place on the island of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. The USS Tarawa participated in several deployments and operations during its 33 years of service, including the Iranian hostage crisis, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
A cruise book is a yearbook-style publication that documents a ship's deployment. It typically includes portraits of the crew, information about the ship's history and capabilities, photos and stories of the cruise and ports of call, and messages from the commanding officer and other dignitaries. Cruise books are produced by the ship's crew or by a private company contracted by the ship. They are usually sold to the crew members as souvenirs or mementos of their service.
The USS Tarawa produced several cruise books during its career, covering different periods of its deployments and operations. Some of these cruise books are available online as high-resolution PDF files that can be downloaded for a fee. These files contain high-quality images, suitable for printing, without watermarks. They also provide double pages with overlapping images as a single page, not as two separate pages. The following are some examples of the USS Tarawa cruise books that can be found online:
