change made to both files was the same just added 1 line entry and after that I have been getting this error on multiple programs, including skype, skype starts succesfully itelf but as it seems one of its services fails to start. I searched but didnt find any installer so I can repair this specific version of .net framework. any help would be appreciated thanks. Another thing to note is that I undid those changes and now both config files are back in their default condition but I am still getting this error.

The error message is clearly inadequate because the framework version was not the issue. But because this question is the first hit you get when you search that error message this answer will hopefully prove useful to someone else.

I have successfully deployed to a similar server (same framework, same runtime). The only difference between the servers is that the bad server has the web root folder on E:\Web instead of under c:\inetpub\wwwroot.

Couple of ways to work around it. Upgrade to SP 16 or add the \4_6_xxxx to the folder path of the CR viewer. Problem is every time you apply a 4.6 Framework update that number changes so you need to change the folder name and web.config file.

Hi, I am trying to deploy my Umbraco Visual Studio solution to our local server for testing. I couldn't find much of the information by googling. Found this but it sounds quite complicated and not sure if it's the right source:

"An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine."

The most common issue when deploying via Visual Studio is that files are missed since Visual Studio will only deploy files that are included in the project. Anything contained within App_Data is usually missed and some important Umbraco folders might be missing also unless they are specifically added.

"Parser Error Message: The 'targetFramework' attribute in the element of the Web.config file is used only to target version 4.0 and later of the .NET Framework (for example, ''). The 'targetFramework' attribute currently references a version that is later than the installed version of the .NET Framework. Specify a valid target version of the .NET Framework, or install the required version of the .NET Framework."

I don't understand why I am getting this error. I have checked the Application Pool in IIS 7 Server manager and the highest framework was available v4.0.3019. I've been googling about this I read that this should be fine. I have also changed my application to target from 4.5.1 to 4.5, but still the same error occurres.

The reason I created in Visual Studio is that in the next version I will be adding some code for authentication etc and would prefer to have Visual Studio. But if this defenately causing the problem I can "initially' use another editor, perhaps Webmatrix? In a long run though I will need Visual Studio and I skip this now it will comeback again.

Right, I have created a new simple MVC project in Visual Studio without installing any Umbraco libraries for testing. And I am still geting the same above errors. In a way it is a good news because it means there is nothing wrong with Umbraco files and libraries. So it's more general issue and I hope I can find some answers quicker.

Thank you James. Yes, that was the problem, the server did not have latest version of .net framework. I've installed it now and the website can run. However, I cannot login to backend. If I run on localhost using Visual Studio it works fine, but not from the domain site.

The database is default and nothing that I have changed/added apart from few users from backend. In terms of design/implementation - also nothing, only a starter kit. So I don't think that this can be to do with the database, but not sure.

This is the error I am getting and not sure what to do. It looks as there is a problem with the database access. Can anyone please suggest what extra step should I take when publishing solution in Visual Studio if the database is default. Should I still change any connection strings?

I have changed the security permissions to various users for App_Data and umbraco.sdf file. Now it behaves oddly - when browse to MYDOMAIN the browser displays a comple blank screen. But if I try MYDOMAIN/Umbraco it works and I can even now login successfully.

No, there were nothing displaying in the source page. After fiddling with the folders and files manually one-by-one and deleting umbraco.config file as you have suggested it worked ))) There were view files missing in Views folder - I don't know why.

@Yoann same issue here. Clean install of Windows Server 2019 latest build, install .NET Framework offline installer 4.8, reboot and boom. Many native control panels, like Server Manager, requesting some 4.0.... version of .NET framework instead, failing to load.

I had the same issue and received zero help or support from Microsoft. Dell support googled and read back to me everything I had googled and tried already. Importing the above registry information fixed it without a reboot.

@DavidSherrill This is the exact fix! For us, our RMM tool stopped working on a server 2019 standard server. It's services wouldn't start. Event Viewer complained about .net. Also server manager wouldn't open with the exact message you mentioned. Applying this fixed it all. thanks!!

YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND! THANK YOU! THIS IS THE ONLY SOLUTION THAT WORKED! Every other solution I've googled of this problem has been some variation of "turn net framework on/off in the "turn windows features on or off" app" or "reinstall the newest version of .net" or "did you try restarting your computer?" (OF COURSE I TRIED RESTARTING MY COMPUTER!! DO THEY THINK I'M AN INFANT??)

Please excuse my novice status displayed in this question, but does one simply copy/paste the text in your registry update file, and does the resulting text file require the line number entries as displayed in your post?

Hello! I'm really new here but I'm hoping I can get some help here. I have an HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC and I've had it since 2014. Within the past 3 months, I've started to get these notifications on my computer that say "This application requires one of the versions of the .NET Framework : v4.0.30319. Do you want to install this .NET Framework version now?" And every time I agree to download the newest version, it will start downloading and give me the following error. "Your installation will not occur. See below for reasons why." and below it says ".NET Framework 4.8 or a later update is already installed on this computer." The programs it's referring to for the .NET framework update are for Avira (my anti-virus) and HPWarrantyChecker.exe. And because it's not letting me download any new versions, I keep on getting these pop-ups on my computer requesting the update every five minutes and I just have to keep on closing them because there's nothing it will let me do except keep on cancelling the download. Can anyone please help me with this? It's getting really annoying having to close out these update requests every five minutes. Thank you!

So starting with your first suggestion, I saw that >net Framework was not full turned on (the check boxes next to them were only filled in but not checked) so I adjusted them so they were both checked and restarted my computer. The problem still persisted so I went onto your next suggestion.

So I went to see if I could try repairing it. I looked through the entire list of programs on my computer to try and find Microsoft .NET Framework and it was nowhere to be seen on that list. I even tried searching it to uninstall it and nothing pulled up so I wasn't able to repair it. I moved on over to your third suggestion.

I checked for updates for my computer and there was one that actually mentioned .NET Framework. I downloaded the update and updated my computer. The problem is still here. Still the same pop-ups and now it's asking about yet another program called HPCEE.exe and its need for a .NET Framework update. Any other suggestions? Thanks again for your suggestions! I would appreciate more!

In software development, the Microsoft .NET Framework has carved a distinct niche for itself. This comprehensive development platform from Microsoft stands tall as a testament to the company's commitment to streamlining application creation, particularly for the Windows ecosystem. Let's explore the reasons behind its popularity and why it remains relevant to many developers today.

Microsoft .NET Framework provides a vast collection of pre-written code (libraries) and a managed execution environment known as the Common Language Runtime (CLR). This foundation empowers developers to craft a wide range of applications, from desktop software and web applications to even games. With its focus on Windows systems, it simplifies many of the complex aspects of coding within that environment.

The Microsoft .NET Framework has fueled the creation of countless popular Windows applications. Its flexibility means you'll find it underpinning web apps, enterprise software, desktop tools, and more.
