Javier Bardem (born March 1, 1969 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) acted with his mother Pilar Bardem in his first movie The Ages of Lulu (1990) directed by Bigas Lunas, who then gave him the lead in Jamón Jamón (1992) opposite Penélope Cruz, and in Golden Balls (1993). He played Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in Before Night Falls (2000) by Julian Schnabel, quadruplegic Ramón Sampedro in The Sea Inside (2004), a man dying of cancer in Biutiful (2010) by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The Spanish actor first English-speaking role was in The Dancer Upstairs (2002) directed by John Malkovich. He starred with Giovanna Mezzogiorno in Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) directed by Mike Newell from the 1985 novel by Gabriel García Márquez, with Tommy Lee Jones in No Country for Old Men (2007) by the Coen Bros, with Penélope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) by Woody Allen. Bardem played a ghost in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) with Johnny Depp, the writer-creator in Mother! (2017) by Darren Aronofsky with Jennifer Lawrence as mother Earth. He acted in Spanish with Penélope Cruz in Everybody Knows (2018) by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, he was directed by Fernando León de Aranoa in English in Loving Pablo (2017) and in Spanish in The Good Boss (El buen patrón, 2021). He played Stilgard, leader of the Fremen in Dune (2021) directed by Denis Villeneuve from the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert. Desi Arnaz with Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos (2021) written and directed by Aaron Sorkin.

The full Iberian Portraits trilogy was screened over the weekend at CINÉ LUMIÈRE in South Kensington (17, Queensberry Pl), starting with JAMÓN JAMÓN (1992) on Friday September 22nd at 6.15pm. The well-attended screening opened with a short intro by London Spanish Film Festival director Joana Granero and followed by a Q&A with BIGAS LUNA TRIBUTE organisers, Betty Bigas (artist, art curator and daughter of Bigas Luna) and Santiago Fouz Hernández (Durham University). After the screening and Q&A in the large Lumière II we moved to the hall for an Iberian ham reception (courtesy of Spanish Ham Master and Cervezas Alhambra). HUEVOS DE ORO/GOLDEN BALLS (1993) followed on Saturday September 23rd at 4.30pm with an introduction by Dr Matt Hilborn, postdoc researcher at Kings College London and author of the forthcoming book Film Comedy and Spain: Humour, Genre and the Nation 1970-2020. Closing the London Tribute, LA TETA Y LA LUNA/THE TIT AND THE MOON (1994) was shown in 35mm on Sunday September 24th at 2.15pm with very special guests: London-based Catalan actress Montserrat Roig de Puig, who had a role in the film, and Catalan filmmaker Ventura Pons introduced the film in conversation with Durham University Professor Santiago Fouz Hernández.

In the 1990s, Dahlin played club football in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. In 1993, he won the Golden Ball (Guldbollen), an award for the best Swedish player of the year, after scoring seven goals in World Cup qualifying matches. At the 1994 World Cup, he scored a further four goals in the tournament which saw Sweden reach 3rd place. His 60 caps and 29 goals for Sweden rank him in the top 10 Swedish goalscorers of all time.
