Thislatest iteration adds even more user-friendly features, including a new sensor format that makes it easier to shoot vertical video for platforms like TikTok, simplified settings, better battery life, and more.

Side by side, the only visible difference between last year's Hero 10 Black and this year's Hero 11 Black is the blue number on the side. Otherwise the body is the same, meaning all your accessories, lens filters, mods, and add-ons will work with the Hero 11.

The biggest and most obvious change is the new sensor. It's marginally bigger, but only vertically, which gives it an 8:7 aspect ratio. Previous models could shoot in 16:9 and 4:3, but the new 8:7 makes the Hero 11 a better choice for shooting the abomination that is vertical video. It makes life easier for TikTokkers, because you can now shoot in 8:7, crop to vertical for platforms that use that abomination, and also crop to 16:9 for video sharing in a sane and sensible way.

I make fun of vertical video, but I recognize its popularity, and this makes the GoPro an even more useful camera for a wider audience. I don't like it, but I am often compelled to crop things for platforms that require it. And yes, you can just turn your older Hero sideways to shoot vertically, but then that footage isn't usable for anything else.

The video specs are very close to the Hero 10. The Hero 11 can record 5.3K video at up to 60 frames per second, 4K at up to 120 fps, and 2.7K at up to 240 fps if you want to shoot high-res slow-motion clips.

The biggest news in the software department is the Hero 11's new option to shoot in 10-bit color. Shooting in 10-bit color gives you greater dynamic range when you shoot in a flat color profile and do all your color toning in postproduction. In other words, 10-bit color is most useful to those who love to edit video and fine-tune their color toning in their postproduction workflows.

As somehow who largely dreads postproduction video editing, I was far more excited about some of the other new software-based features in the Hero 11 Black, especially the Star Trails feature. If you've ever tried shooting star trails before, you know how laborious it is to stack hundreds of images, so this will probably blow your mind: The Hero 11 can shoot perfect star trail video with a single press of a button. Again, the ability to pull out a 24 megapixel still comes in handy.

Other new software modes include a Light Painting mode if you want to have some fun with a flashlight, and a Vehicle Light Trails mode to easily turn nighttime car lights into rivers of white and red.

In keeping with the idea of less work for the user, there are now two modes available in the GoPro: Easy and Pro. The camera ships in Easy mode, which offers a streamlined interface for those who aren't going to wade deep into the GoPro's color settings and other fine-tuning details. If you are a pro, or are just used to the old UI, it's, um, easy to switch to Pro, which is the familiar GoPro interface.

Another nice feature that isn't directly related to the Hero 11 (in fact, it works with all GoPros going back the Hero 5) is more control over Auto Highlights video. You do need to be a GoPro subscriber, and you have to turn on Auto Upload.

Once you do, the Quik app will automatically generate edits and put them in your Quik app. That much has been around for a while, but GoPro now introduces the ability to edit Auto Highlight video without downloading the source files to your mobile device. You'll end up editing a low-res proxy, but when you export or share to another app it'll send the high-res version. Theoretically this will solve my main gripe with Quik, which is that it's just too much for my phone, but unfortunately this feature was not available to test when I was writing this review.

All that said, I did not actually test the Hero 11 Mini. I still think that, for most people, the Hero 11 Black is the best action camera to buy. If you have the Hero 10, is it worth upgrading? That depends on whether or not you need the extra vertical space in your shots. If you're constantly editing video down to different formats, then the Hero 11 is definitely worth the investment.

Finally, discover a means to affix your action camera to your helmet in a vertical orientation. Record video and take pictures in a portrait format. Ideal for creating content for Instagram Reels and Tiktoks.

I am not using this as much as I thought I would. I have used it with a Hero 9, Hero 11, and Hero 11. I bought it for TikTok videos both on a motorcycle and indoors. But, on the bike it's better to have the wide shot so I stopped using it for that. And I do shoot vertical at home but it doesn't work with the media mod. So it's really not getting used anymore at all. But it is high quality so if you're looking for vertical on teh go this does work well. On a side note, the helmet mount is amazing

Awesome mount - I use this for mtbing - keeps footage in the middle rather than offset compared to other mounts.

Awesome for filming 9:16 for phone videos/ social media

Only thing is - I broke mine trying to connect it back to my gopro

GoPro has announced the newest iteration of its flagship action camera, the GoPro Hero 12 (buy here). It brings with it some new features over the GoPro Hero 11 (buy here), including the ability to natively shoot vertical video.

Probably the biggest thing to happen with the GoPro Hero 12 is the introduction of native vertical video with a 9:16 aspect ratio. No longer do you need to resort to mounting the camera sideways to some dodgy rig.

GoPro says the battery management system in the Hero 12 has been re-engineered to provide runtimes double that of the Hero 11. More efficient processing allows the camera to shoot for up to 70 minutes at 5.3K 60p resolution.

This extends to the lower resolutions, too, with up to a very impressive 155 minutes for 1080p at 30fps. The included GoPro Enduro battery, the company says, allows you to keep power and a good running time even in very cold temperatures.

We have noticed that once we changed the traditional format of how human vision works, AKA widescreen to what Instagram uses, AKA vertical video, our videos started blowing up on Instagram Reels. It appears that the algorithm gives a little special treatment to vertical video, at least on Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube's "Shorts".

The Influencer is a 90 degree adaptor for our lineup of 3D printed chin mounts designed for social media creators. Choose a chin mount for your helmet, add The Influencer and let GoPro do the rest. No cropping, just native 4k video ready for you to upload to Instagram Reels, Tik Tok videos, or YouTube shorts.

We have found that the chin mount location is optimal for a POV camera for a couple of reasons. First, audio pickup is much better. With the camera in front of your mouth you can clearly hear yourself swearing as your buddy pulls away or laughing when the same buddy gets stuck in the rut you warned him about 10 minutes earlier. Second, your camera does not stick out where a tree branch can knock it out of alignment, or worse, send it tumbling into the weeds or off the side of a cliff. While there is a chance that you may hit the camera if you crash, we have found that most people do their best to turn their head to avoid a face full of dirt whenever possible. Even if you do go chin first into a rock, we can promise you that the mount will not break.

Our chin mounts are made of Thermoplastic Polyurethane which has rubber-like properties. This allows us to make mounts that are flexible enough to twist into a pretzel, but strong enough to keep your camera pointed exactly where you aim it without inducing vibration even at full boogie over rocky terrain.

We designed the mounts for maximum convenience, not just durability. The GoPro mounting screw is on the opposite side making it easier to access the battery side door. We also have notches to help you get a consistent tip back angle every time. You should be able to fit most cameras from GoPro to DJI Osmo and everything in between on our custom-fit mounts.

The mounts are designed to be removable without leaving any residue on the helmet, and we do offer replacement 3M mounting tape if you want to reattach it later. That said, you will need to also pick up some Gorilla Clear Grip Glue (say that five times fast) to adhere the tape to the mount.

For samples of what kind of perspective our mounts can give you both with and without The Influencer, check out our Instagram channel. That is unless you are under 15, then you can hit up our Tik Tok (just kidding, lot's of big kids are into dancing too ?). If you are baffled by both of those, we also showcase our hooligan antics on YouTube. Whatever you choose, you can see why mounting your camera to the chinbar is the best way to capture the action.

In the HERO12, you can create presets for each of these scenarios or simply follow these tips and modify your settings accordingly every time you go out. Fun fact, you can now rename all your presets using the Quik App!

Vertical 9:16 with Max Lens Mod 2.0 is a non-compromising vertical FOV, meaning you get the same view vertically in 9:16 mode, while the camera is horizontal, compared to physically mounting the camera vertically.

Always striving for the perfect photograph, my friend Brian suggested that having the cameras mounted vertically might give us a better camera alignment. The test below was done with that in mind. Unfortunately the wind resistance caused the cameras to vibrate front and back. Because the GoPro Max is further from the center of the mount, it appeared to move much more than the GoPro 8. Given the amount of vibration I observed, the results are amazingly good.

I'll design the mount for vertical use. The standard design has the camera lens on the high side, and is a top loading case, and has a hole in the bottom to help push the camera back out of the case.

I bought and use two Vertical Mounts - for GoPro 10 and for GoPro Mini 11. Both are high quality and very useful. Camera grip is very tight and safe, mount to the original gopro adapters is tough, without any loose, you dont have to use too much force to screw the camera securely.

Good job NoLine guys!
