The news was leaked earlier and indirectly revealed through Call of Duty's ARG marketing campaign, but now we have explicit confirmation from Activision via press release. The complete list of 16 launch maps includes: Afghan, Derail, Estate, Favela, Highrise, Invasion, Karachi, Quarry, Rundown, Rust, Scrapyard, Skidrow, Sub Base, Terminal, Underpass, and Wasteland.

What's even more interesting is that these classic maps are returning remastered and modernized with additions that weren't there in 2009's Modern Warfare 2. It's unclear exactly what those new features are, but they're sure to put a fresh spin on a bunch of familiar environments.

This will also come as a very welcome surprise to folks who were hoping for at least some of the maps in 2020's Modern Warfare 2 remaster, which only included the campaign and didn't feature any sort of multiplayer component. Meanwhile, and of course confusingly, the 2022 Modern Warfare 2 reboot sequel is even more distinct from the 2009 game and doesn't share any of the same launch maps, so this really seems like it gives fans of that 14-year-old game what they've been wanting for years.

This year's new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is full of old maps from the original 2009 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which is confusing both in terms of the series timeline, and because this is a new $70 game, not a remaster. And yet, despite the mild embarrassment that comes with feeling nostalgic for Call of Duty maps, I have to say I'm a little excited.

I immediately flash back to the late 2000s on reading the list. I played the hell out of Modern Warfare 2 back then, and had the less common experience of visiting Infinity Ward's office and writing a strategy guide to these maps for a magazine, because, yeah, I was doing this job 14 years ago, too. The sights and layouts of Afghan, Scrapyard, Favela, Derail, Estate, and Highrise are particularly stuck in my memory.

"The way we approached it is, 'How are we going to make the best versions of those maps that people have ever played?'" said art director Matt Abbott in the video embedded above. "Because that's what we want as fans."

To that end, adjustments have been made to "fit more modern gameplay," said design director Zach Hodson. As one example, you can now mantle to places you couldn't originally reach on the skyscraper rooftops of Highrise, but Hodson says that "for the most part [the maps are] going to feel incredibly similar" to the originals.

The blog post goes into a little more depth on the changes: "Because of technological advancements in Call of Duty's animation and movement techniques over the past 14 years, Operators can Tactical Sprint and leap between rooftops, mantle, and navigate alleyways with Tac-Stance, giving players more confidence during these frenetic, close-quarters engagements," it reads. "Essentially, a 'modernized' Modern Warfare 2 (2009) map means an authentic multiplayer experience with learnings from the Call of Duty franchise's rich history."

The upcoming Modern Warfare 3 is a bit of a weird one for the series. For the first time, all unlocks from last year's game, the new Modern Warfare 2, will carry over. This is also the first time since 2007 that a Call of Duty game was followed with a direct sequel the next year. It was rumored for a while that Activision was planning a big expansion to Modern Warfare 2 instead of a whole new game this year, and it certainly feels like Modern Warfare 3 could've started that way.

If Modern Warfare 3 does end up feeling a little slim, though, a certain kind of nostalgia-prone sap (me) might be appeased by these 16 remade maps anyway. You can read more about them on the Call of Duty blog. Modern Warfare 3 will be out November 10.

As previously revealed, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will launch with meticulously crafted, modernized versions of these 16 Core Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps, constructed to maintain the authenticity and accuracy of the originals.

Fourteen years later, Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Ward have a wealth of game engine and design tech advancements at their disposal, such as variable-rate shading, and numerous runtime systems for better enemy visibility, to name a few.

In other words, those who played Favela, Terminal, or Scrapyard in 2009 may expect a wave of nostalgia as they encounter the visual updates, and more experienced veterans may appreciate the modernization updates for gameplay flow purposes.

Many other updates and features are coming to all the maps, though each still retains its authenticity and core design. To that end, all the Modern Warfare III launch maps were built from the ground up (rather than being taken from existing points of interest in Al Mazrah).

The bookshop is now a movie store, and the ceiling has been repaired; the lights are back on for greater visibility when passing through. Further lighting improvements to areas like the hallway and tunnel ensure that Operators are clearly visible against the environment.

The standard office layout from 2009 has been updated for the new tenant, a company whose arcade machines, movie posters, and video game systems profess their love for entertainment. Though the occupants are different, both buildings retain their most notorious power positions. The crane still provides a killer view from the northern building, while those willing to scale the front of Actibase will be rewarded with an unmatched rooftop position.

The Call of Duty community will experience a selection of modernized Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps for themselves starting on October 5, where representatives from around the world will play Modern Warfare III Multiplayer as part of the Call of Duty: Next franchise showcase.

We wish you a very merry CODMAS! I know, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is not even a month old. Season 1 is here, though, and its bringing holiday cheer to all the good little Operators of Urzikstan. Here's a breakdown of the new weapons, battle pass, maps, and operators coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone with Season 1.

Sledgehammer Games put all their chips in the nostalgia basket for Modern Warfare 3, with 16 maps at launch that were remakes of every map from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). While the overall community response to this has been positive, there are still a few folks who want new maps to sink their teeth into.

Even before Modern Warfare 3 was released, the development teams behind the first-person shooter were open that seasonal content would include new, never-before-seen maps. Now they're ready to deliver on that promise. Modern Warfare 3 will receive 4 new maps during Season 1.

How is that for a new map name. Say hello to Meat, a compact map centered around the East Bay Meats slaughterhouse. Call of Duty fans love their small maps. From Rust to Shipment to Das Haus to Nuketown, small maps dominate.

They're great for boosting your Kill/Death ratio, they're a lot of fun for demolitionists who want to torment everybody with launchers and noob tubes, and they're great for knocking out camo challenges. It's too early to know for sure if Meat will join the ranks of the greatest compact maps, but we can get our loadouts with a noob tube ready in the meantime.

Meat is particularly designed to allow you to make use of the new Tac-Stance ability and Modern Warfare 3's operator agility as you weave through the small confines of a meat locker and processing center. The outer loading dock will over longer sight lines for those who are grinding out those sniper camos.

The Call of Duty team hasn't given up their efforts to get everybody to embrace underwater gunfights. Greece is a mid-sized Mediterranean-inspired map based on an undisclosed coastal town. From the screenshot alone, it has the potential to be one of the prettiest maps CoD has ever offered.

Fans of close-quarters combat can look forward to Rio, a bright and colorful map with elegant streets and an upscale shopping center that reportedly offers tight engagement zones. Like Meat, Rio has the potential to scratch the itch for those of us looking for our next small map to bombard with every explosive available in-game. Enemies can be engaged in the tight quarters of the mall, or take the fight outside to the vibrant streets. A covered walkway, garage, and vehicles give players ample vantage points, so don't forget to look up.

2v2 Gunfight was a popular game mode for Call of Duty that was surprisingly absent from MW3 at launch. It will be returning to playlist rotation in Season 1, with fan-favorite maps returning alongside an all-new map. Training Facility is a complete training course used by Konni Group set in the remains of an old warehouse.

With a central shoot house and plenty of verticality and climbing opportunities for the operators who like to look down on their unsuspecting foes, you can use your enhanced abilities to achieve the best angles for your weapons.
