Good point. I also changed the settings so people have to request an
invitation to join.

How does the invitation system work with Google Groups? Could that potentially turn off anyone that might stumble upon the group and want to easily join?

These are the join and moderation options. on our dev team discussion
list, we have the asterisked settings, but i'd change them of they
ever became a problem.
Who can join?
Anyone can join *
People have to be invited
People can request an invitation to join
Message moderation
All messages are held for moderation
No moderation - messages are delivered directly
Messages from new members are moderated *

The "anyone can join" setting was allowing any spammer to join the
group. I am now using the "People can request an invitation to join"
setting... not 100% sure how it works, but I suppose people can easily
just ask and I'll let them join.
