No matter what language we speak, we learn and absorb information more effectively when the information is presented visually. In fact, our brains process visuals 60,000 times faster than text. Additionally:
Giving all students in your classroom access to visual learning opportunities can help reinforce your lessons and ensure retention of information. Teaching ELL students is no different. A picture is worth a thousand words and visual clues are essential in helping your ELL students take in more information than they would from written or spoken instruction alone.
As you introduce new vocabulary words, identify the objects within each category, and pronounce the words on the page. Allow time for your students to share their experiences and previous knowledge about the pictures and words in the category.
This twist on the old-school guessing game begins with the teacher or a student writing spaces for each letter of the word they selected. Students guess what letters are in the word. For each incorrect guess, the teacher or student draws or reveals a tiny detail of the picture in the book to give them a clue.
Use the classic recess game to introduce new vocabulary words to your students. Using their picture dictionaries, students should provide a definition, write a sentence, draw a picture, and brainstorm synonyms for each new word. The picture dictionary tool displays the definition using images.
A picture dictionary or pictorial dictionary is a dictionary where the definition of a word is displayed in the form of a drawing or photograph. Picture dictionaries are useful in a variety of teaching environments, such as teaching a young child about their native language, or instructing older students in a foreign language, such as in the Culturally Authentic Pictorial Lexicon. Picture dictionaries are often organized by topic instead of being an alphabetic list of words, and almost always include only a small corpus of words.

(September 2008) The publication of the Eastern and Central Arrernte Picture Dictionary was celebrated as part of the Irrkerlantye Festival Night on 17 September in Alice Springs, Australia. Arrernte-speaking communities and an SIL linguist worked together to compile this most recent addition to the series of nine illustrated Aboriginal dictionaries. Published by IAD Press, Australia's oldest independent Aboriginal publishing house, these volumes comprise a significant contribution to Australia's cultural wealth and knowledge base. The series includes all the major languages of Central Australia.
The 192-page Eastern and Central Arrernte Picture Dictionary is a valuable literacy tool based on aspects of Arrernte culture, both past and present. It is a resource for school children and their teachers, for Arrernte speakers wanting to become literate in Arrernte and for anyone wanting to learn about the Arrernte language. The dictionary contains a pronunciation guide and each entry includes a sample sentence and is associated with an appropriate illustration.
Eastern and Central Arrernte communities enlisted the assistance of an SIL linguist to compile the Dictionary which contains over 600 key Arrernte words with more than 400 black and white accompanying illustrations. It draws on Arrernte elders' knowledge of the ethnobiology and natural history of their lands as well as kinship systems and the groups relating to their social structure. The traditional Eastern and Central Arrernte region stretches across central Australia and encompasses Alice Springs and the East MacDonnell Ranges.
