THE FLOATING WORLD: CD Release Party
Friday, January 28
Tonight the Red Poppy celebrates Floating World’s Floating World Vol. 1—original songs set to the poems of three Mission District outsider poets. The Floating World is a suite that pays homage to the hidden souls and secret stories that drift through the streets of San Francisco. Composer and bass clarinetist Aaron Novik has composed serenades for this imaginary, yet authentic, space, invoking the spectral, carnival-like atmosphere of San Francisco. The music was inspired by poems from three Mission District poets who inhabit the fringe of this unseen territory: Bart Alberti, Swan and Michael B. Loggins.
Dina Maccabee: viola
Marie Abe: accordion
Lisa Mezzacappa: upright bass
Jamie Moore: drums
Kasey Knudsen: alto sax
Melody Ferris: vocals
Aaron Novik: bass clarinet, compositions
Floating World Vol. 1 is being released on Porto Franco Records on CD and two vinyl records (the second titled Don't Call Life a Bad Word), with jackets printed by hand on a letterpress by Bay Area artist and printmaker Rebecca Peters.
From Bart Alberti’s “Bataille”:
“A ladybug lights on a sheet of paper;
Elsewhere a train pulls into a station. These
Are so many wounds inflicted on the system.
At the summit of its insignificance
The sun shines down its deadly laughter.”
$10-$15 admission. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.
