I am a from Idaho and working at a lodge near Igiugig and wanting to know about the soil. I have planted cilantro, mint, thai basil and dill all to no avail. Is planting directly in the dirt something that can be done? I have little or no way to amend the soil due to the huge bear population, but any suggestions would help.

I would suggest you get in touch with Jim Loiland, with USDA NRCS. He understands the soil profile better than most people and can tell you what you need.
You can also get your soil tested through Brookside Laboratories, Inc. (blinc.com). If you are absolutely bent on growing stuff this year, you can always try diluted fish blood.
Good luck!

I plant most of that stuff in pots, but what I put in the garden I
also supplement soil with compost from my worm bin, and worm tea.
