Evinrudechanged how they indicate year in the model number in 1980. Depending on the whether your engine is from before or after that year determins how you will find your Evinrude engine year information.

The first serial number sold in a year becomes the beginning serial number. Serial numbers between that year's beginning serial number and the next fall into the same year. Search for your engine horsepower on the Mercury Mariner serial number year chart located here to find the beginning serial number for the range that includes your engine.

I am looking for a resource that would allow me to use an Evinrude serial number for figure out the model number. I have seen a few sites that have listed serial numbers for others brands, but not Evinrude. I have an old crate with a model number and serial number stamped on the side. I can make out the serial number, but not the complete model number. Thank you for your help.

Sorry it took me a few days to get photos posted. This is my crate and the motor I picked up to display inside. My motor is a 1940 Sportwin 4353. Let me know if you can make out the model number on the crate, I would love to find the correct year and model to display inside. Or even better the exact motor that came in this crate. Thanks again.

$8.90 freight Australia wide (Excludes heavy or bulky items and delivery to remote areas). All orders ship in 1 to 3 days and we will contact you if items are on back-order and are going to be longer.

All pricing is for a quantity of 1 only. Sometimes descriptions may mention "packet, pair or box" or even list a quantity in the description, however this is just either how they are shipped to us or may represent the quantity that is required for that particular engine.

Please have your model and serial number handy before using this facility. When selecting Evinrude year models you MUST SCROLL DOWN to the bottom of the list to see the very latest models as they are classed by letters and not a year model.

Established in 1946, Hunts Marine is a third-generation family-owned marine retailer with over 75 years experience in recreational boating. We have three great showrooms in Sydney, Wollongong and Batemans Bay which all stock a wide range of fully rigged, clearly priced boat packages.

One of the most important parts of any marine engine is when it was made. That's because the year model has a huge impact on what parts will work with your engine, including spark plugs and oil. Thankfully, finding out your boat's year model isn't difficult and you don't need any special decoder rings to figure it out. In fact, all you need to know is where in the model number to look for it - and a little bit of common sense.

The first part of the model number is usually a number that indicates the shaft length. This is followed by a letter that indicates the manufacturer's code. This code is what helps us determine where your engine was made and what year it was produced.

There will also be a series of letters that indicate the model variation, if there is one. These usually show up after the year code, but they can appear before as well. They can help identify special design features that were made with a particular engine, such as starting style or tilt/trim options.

Finally, the last portion of the model number will indicate what type of engine it is. It will either say Johnson or Evinrude (or the less common OMC brand, Quiet Rider) and it will also indicate whether it's a four-stroke engine or a carbureted two-stroke.

Your Johnson outboard model number can usually be found on the nameplate located on the motor or the mounting bracket. The nameplate should contain a serial number and a model number which will identify the year and - depending on the nameplate type - certain details of that motor and help you obtain the correct handbook, parts and service literature.

Find the serial number or code number. It will be found on the nameplate located on the outboard itself, on the mounting bracket or on the silver core plug on top of the power head. The serial number is typically a mixture of letters and numbers or a series of letters alone.

Decode for an earlier model, if the INTRODUCES code is not fitting. From 1969 to 1980, the year is in the model number by year. For example, a 1976 outboard has a 76 in its model or serial number, such as xxxx76x.

To decode motors 1968 and earlier, go to the Bombardier website for your outboard's year. It is easiest to look up the horsepower and year online. Bombardier acquired OMC and the Johnson and Evinrude brands in 2001.

I just bought a used 17 foot Grumman canoe. This is the number on the plate near the front of the craft:

21170-G-5-17

17 must mean 17 feet but does anyone know what the rest is? Can you get the year of make on that? Thanks!

Paul

not totally sure

but if i remember correctly, i was told that the month year etc is listed (must be the first part) then the weight of the hull as there was a heavy model and a more lightweight model - possibly the middle- that would leave the 17 as the length. Call Grumman (Marathon Boats) they will tell you

Contrary to what many people think, not all are the same. A 1999 2-stroke Johnson engine is not identical to a 1993 25-horsepower Johnson engine, and even engines with the same horsepower that were manufactured in the same year may be different.

To identify Johnson Evinrude engines, we are only interested in the model stamped on this plate. Unless you are the lucky owner of a Johnson engine made in the 1960s (and that's possible because there are quite a few that still run "like new"), the model must look something like this: BE25RCOA. Using this example, we know that the engine is a 25hp string-start Evinrude made in Belgium in 1985.

Letters like "I", "K" or "M" mean you have a military model, a "living" piece of history on the boat. Finding parts for it, however, is nearly impossible. Johnson Evinrude has not published parts manuals for military models and we can tell you from experience that the parts are not identical to the commercial or recreational versions.

When dealing with a used Mercury engine, always check to see if it has the series. If something goes wrong with a Mercury engine (and you're not lucky enough to have the OEM code stamped on the part) and you don't have the series or model, it's impossible to identify and almost impossible to buy parts that are compatible with it.

Unfortunately, the Mercury or Mariner engine series doesn't tell us much about it, we can't figure out the year of manufacture based on the series, and no one can ever guarantee the compatibility of a part without the series.

If you are looking to buy parts for Mercury or Mariner boat engines, you need to remember that not all engines are the same. The year of manufacture doesn't matter, it is useful to know if it says Lightning or Super America on the engine, but without the series, no one can guarantee parts compatibility.

Another complicating feature of Mercury and Mariner engines is that they were manufactured at one time by Yamaha and Tohatsu respectively, which means that these engines are Yamaha or Tohatsu and are only "branded" as Mercury. This in no way implies that all Mercury engines are made by anyone else. We mention this feature because it is possible to come across a Mercury without a series, but visually recognize the parts as identical to a Yamaha or Tohatsu engine.

Above we have the model "F15AEH" and the first rectangle below contains the code. To correctly identify the parts, we need both the series and the call sign, but usually, only the call sign is enough.

When it comes to Yamaha boat engines, the country of manufacture is very relevant when buying parts. If it was made in Japan, then you are in luck and you can find almost anything at acceptable prices. If it was made in France then you have an engine from a fairly limited series and it is very difficult to find parts for it.

Inboard engines are the easiest to identify, but also the engines with the greatest variety of parts depending on the series. Despite the pervasive idea that all GM blocks are the same, we guarantee they are not.

On older Mercury outboards, going back into the 50's and possibly even earlier, the serial number would generally be viewed at the leading edge of the swivel bracket, as seen in the image below. If for any reason that number may have been changed, removed, or can no longer be read, every Mercury had a freeze plug, which is on the powerhead and about the size of a quarter. That freeze plug will have a serial number on it. So long as you know your HP and the serial number, you can identify the year of your outboard.
