Mooneer,

I neglected to ask about this over the weekend but is there possibly a plan to include wireless connectivity in the MAC/WIN/Linux versions FreeDV?

With all the IC-705's, future WIFI connected and other Ethernet  connected radios out there, and the propensity of USB to be easily "RFI'd"  it might be pretty nice to be able to eliminate USB altogether as a path for RFI.

Just thinking out loud and adding "things" to my wish list!!

Hi Rick,

I've actually been able to use my IC-705 with the wfview utility to operate FreeDV over Wi-Fi without any problems. Bluetooth also works as long as your operating system recognizes your headset as a separate audio device. Just so I make sure I understand correctly, how were you envisioning wireless connectivity working?

Thanks,

Well,

Pretty much as you describe it except maybe making it a native feature instead of having to use a separate application such as wfview.

And I do actually have wfview running well on both my Win10 and Macbook Pro laptops.

I'm not exactly sure how to connect them together though..... (virtual audio ports?)

Hi Rick,

Yeah, typically you'd use something like VB-Cable or Virtual Audio Cable (https://vac.muzychenko.net/en/) for this. wfview and FreeDV's radio sound devices would be set something like this (assuming Virtual Audio Cable):

Line 1 (output device on wfview)->Line 2 (FreeDV radio input device, i.e. the top device in the Receive tab in Tools->Audio Config)
Line 3 (FreeDV radio output device, i.e. the bottom device in the Transmit tab)->Line 4 (wfview input device)

For PTT/CAT control, you can either use a virtual COM port (and use "Icom IC-705" for the radio device in FreeDV) or use "Hamlib NET rigctl" and "localhost:4532" or whatever the rigctl server inside wfview is using for the port).

Thanks,

You know, I believe I have actually tried VB-Cable when I first started using the SDR-Play with WJTX installed on my Win10 laptop several years ago....

It's been a pretty long time since I played with it.

I would probably want to do it with the Mac Book Pro and I saw there is a MAC version  ov VB-Cable for  MAC os  10.x -- 12.x so maybe that's the way to go.

Wfview really works well on the Mac........So I'll give it a try beating my head against those walls and let you know how it turns out!

Mooneer,

Well,

I installed VB-Cable on the Macbook and the Win10 laptop and I'm about 3/4 the way "there"!!
(Haven't tried to get Win10 working yet)

Using the MacBook, It took me quite a while to figure out that I needed to use "Port Audio" in WfView and get RigCTL going but I now have (analog and digital)  receive going to the Macbook speakers  and FreeDV radio control (PTT and freq)

I am having a bit of a problem getting audio from  FreeDV --> WFview and then   modulation  --> the radio.

I do see "Frm Mic" audio in the Freedv scope screen but nothing at the radio (DV or Analog)
 (Mic sample, 44100,  VB-Cable Core-Audio sample 48000)

I "Record 2 Seconds" and when I "Play 2 Seconds" I only hear about an 800Hz tone (if I use "Buiilt-in Output)

should I change everything to 44.1kHz in the MIDI menu?

Audio devices in the Mac MIDI menu shows VB-Cable (2-ins / 2- outs)

FreeDV  only shows "ID 2"  in the RX/TX choices.  (I thought the ID for TX/RX had to be different)

I am out of ideas....

Cheers,

Rick

Hi Rick,

Have you checked the "Data Mod" setting on your IC-705? This should be set to "WLAN" if you're using wfview or it'll basically ignore all TX audio from it.

Thanks,

Thanks Mooneer,

I actually did.  I also noticed that while SDR-Control for the IPAD actually automatically sets those modes in the 705 as required when it connects, when you close the program it resets the modes to whatever is programmed when you disconnect.  (MIC, USB, etc)

I noticed that wfview leaves the 705 modes in WLAN when disconnect is selected  (unless there's a exit mode choice in there somewhere)

I will check that more closely though!

Thanks again,

Rick

Got it working!

It was a little frustrating getting all the settings correct.  The Wfview audio I/O  settings (3 choices)  were not obvious!

I love it when a plan comes together!  Now , to get it working on the Winblows laptop!!

The goal will be to get it working on the MacBook Pro running OpenSuSE Linux (Tumbleweed)!!

Piece of cake!!  I just have to build a FreeDV RPM from source!!
