I listened to the recording of last night's FreeDV net supplied by
WA5QPZ.  I notice that what his audio seems much more crisp
than what I hear on my setup.

I wonder if that's because I'm using a headset for the receive audio
or maybe it's due to the equipment I'm using.  Any ideas from anyone?

I think next week I'll try feeding it through my little audio amplifier and
to the external speakers and see if it makes any difference.  That is, if
I can keep feedback from happening.

Thanks for any comments.

Hey Mike,

There is another possibility that may be able to help you as well.

Please take a look at the TOOLS/FILTER area, and see if you can adjust anything there to bring up or down, any of the audio levels to enhance your audio device.

I have used these controls in the past, to make a $5.00 usb sound card device sound just as good as my $300.00 Heil headset.

Since we all have different types of audio devices, for speakers and/or microphones, the settings may well be different for each of us.

But give that a try and see if that helps you in any way.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

Mike,
Since Dudley is recording the net locally, I believe he just feeds his microphone directly into the recording. It is not FreeDV modulated and then demodulated.

Yes, I realized that.  What I was referring to was the sound of the signals he
was hearing on his radio (such as you).  Those sounded much better than what
I hear.

Walter, K5WH,  gave me some suggestions that I'll try for next week.
Thanks for the reply.

Mike,

Walter is correct,  decoded RX  audio from FreeDV is piped from the computer , into a mixer all flat,  recorded directly into a mp4 file (at 48000 sample rate) along with the audio ,  encoded and sent live to YouTube (hence the long live delay on YouTube.    Once the live session is over , the mp4 is sent to YT for their processing and then I am able to repost it ..    I try not to add any eq values to any recordings ..   But even on the best of  Internet SDR ,  there is some audio filtering and processing that can tint the audio.    My local ham pc,  is running Win11, Realtek motherboard sound card, just with basic drivers ,  as minimal as possible, without any of the vendors "added" EQ ,  basic mono when possible..
My additional Web receivers (last week I was using WebSDR , North Utah #4 receiver)   I try to pick the best reception ,  but some do add some  "color "  to their audio outputs..  What you heard the other day was mostly through my Flex 6700 and processed from my computer.

I have used an EQ program from  Romac Software,  https://www.romacsoftware.com/  its a 10 band graphic equalizer  , made by hams for just this purpose  of EQing the input and output audio ,   And they say it works well with the newer radios using USB audio connections..   They also have a CW IDer that I have used for years,  just for the purpose of IDing ham voice transmissions..

I have a total of 4 mixers, audio gate to prevent my hot mic audio from getting into the recording / live mix ,  and mixer to blend the various receiver audios together ..

hope this helps,
