Not hearing any conversations

I've configured JS8, Winlink, and WSJTX for use with myIcom 7300 and these apps are working well.

A few days ago I installed FreeDV and although I see signal on 20 meters, I don't hear anything in my speakers. Nor when I look at the transmit signal do I see anything at all.

So, I guess I need help. I've configured the mic input to be audio codec, and the sound output to be my direct computer speakers. Is there a way to somehow test my setup? and/or what am I doing wrong?

update. I am hearing freedv audio every few seconds, and the signal level on the left is showing as 0 most of the time.

Can you tell us which version of freedv you have installed? If it's
recent there is an Easy Setup option under the Tools menu that will
help get it going.

The earliest version with Easy Setup is v1.8.7 but I would recommend
installing v1.8.9 as this has some bug fixes that make it easier and
nicer to use.

Hi Jim,

Band conditions haven't been too great today unfortunately. I was hearing W4BCX on 15 meters earlier (21.313 MHz) but no one else so far today.

Anyway, to make sure your setup is working, there are a few test files you can play back in the application. Go to Tools->Start Play File - From Radio and navigate to your FreeDV installation (C:\Program Files\FreeDV\share\freedv-gui\wav), then select a file such as "ve9qrp_700d.wav" and choose Open. If everything's working well, you should hear audio being decoded.

Thanks Brian. I have 1.8.9 installed. I found the area in audio setup where one can play from the microphone on the top, and play to the speaker on the bottom. Both of these tests are working. I periodically hear noise out of the speakers and see some faint signals in the waterfall. I looked at pskreporter and it is not seeing me transmit and is only showing one person on freedv on 20m (WA6NUT) for the past 24 hours.

Hi Jim,

If you try the latest test build (https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/releases/tag/v1.8.10-20230518) you'll be able to spot onto FreeDV Reporter (https://freedv-reporter.k6aq.net/) as well. There are currently five more people with the app open as of this writing that are reporting there, with hopefully more once 1.8.10 becomes an official stable build.

Thanks Mooneer. I was somewhat succesful with the wav file. The waterfall looked very good, but nothing was coming out of the speakers. I'll explore.

Sorry for all of the posts folks. After closing and reopening FreeDV, I was able to see the playback of the wav file and hear the decoded signal in the speakers.

I am in an HOA restricted area and have a sloper antennat which I use succesfully with the 3 other digital modes mentioned.

How do you all think I should proceed?

Hi Jim,

You can try transmitting on 14.236 MHz as I'm currently listening there. I'm not sure we'll necessarily have a path this time of day but it's worth a shot. Alternatively we can schedule a contact (either here or via the Discord).

I am sure everyone knows this, but just in case:  To enable transmitting, be sure that the 7300 is set to Data mode.  For 20m, the display should show USB-D.  When you key the FreeDV PTT, you should see your transmit waveform on the 730's spectrum display.  

Transmit audio Config is Device   Speakers (x-USB Audio CODEC)

Thanks Bob. Just got off of a most valuable zoo session with Walter and others who helped me greatly get FreeDV  up and running. I've now installed 1.8.10. I've got to somehow get the microphone level up, no success with that yet. I also understand that version1.8.10 allows one to see who is receiving or transmitting. I don't see yet how to display that with version 1.8.10.
