Still transmitting tone

Howdy all,

Thanks for the 2.3.1 release.  Right after install I started receiving, as opposed to previous version where I had to massage my gain structure between different packet apps.  Probably just a coincidence that levels were already set, but off to a good start nonetheless.

My problem is that I still transmit tone.  Probably some winblows idiosyncrasy, but if anyone has encountered this and has found a fix, I am all ears.

Running winblows 11, Xiegu G90, and a Xiegu DE-19.  I will try on macos shortly.

When I select analog through FreeDV it works as expected.  I am using a far away websdr to monitor my traffic.  I have all dynamics turned off in sound devices in windows(AGC, listen to device, ...), flat as a pancake can be.

Thank you.

Jason,

Did you ever have a look at the PDF by WA2TOP describing the setup for an IC705?

It's all IC705 up to about page 14 but after that is speicifally speaks to WIN11

The 705 stuff isn't all that important for you  but the Win11 stuff is. Many of the controls are reached by using the Legacy Control Panel interface that is not readily reachable in Win11     >Settings>system> search>find a setting> "Control Panel"

Additionally,  when you actually do select "Analog" does microphone audio (from the computer mic) actually make it to the radio?

I primarily use a home assembled desktop (Asrock AMD 3/3+ motherboard)

Running Linux Mint.

The other computer is a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (Core-i7) running KDE Neon  https://neon.kde.org/

Both running the FreeDV AppImage for Linux

Both work flawlessly.

I also had an Early 2015 MacBook Pro (intel Core-i5)  running MACOS 12.x (Monterey) and it worked fine with the Mac Version of FreeDV,
But I put Linux Mint on that one and gave it to my Daughter!

And, of course, I also have the fairly new (year old ) ACER Nitro NV15 (Core i7) Microshaft Winblows 11laptop  that I only got working recently with the help of the fine write-up graciously provided by Mike,  WA2TOP

When I was still pulling hair with the WIN11 ACER, I swapped the HD and installed Ubuntu Linux and then FreeDV just to prove the hardware WAS NOT the problem!!

Ubuntu worked flawlessly too!

Thanks for the reply and reminder I need to follow up with this thread.

So I moved DE-19(usb audio interface from G90) to mac and everything worked.  Recorded from a websdr and played back through FreeDV, there I am.  Moved everything back to windows and it worked or at least I am not transmitting tone, transmitting something much wider than tone.  For whatever reason I can not play back audio through FreeDV on windows.  Gain structure, I am sure?

Not sure if this helps, but, before mysterious fix, whenever I pressed PPT it would transmit tone, and tone is transmitted when I press "tune", which probably always has been the case?  Hopefully that makes sense?  Essentially; Before, on windows, I would always transmit tone when "PPT" and "tune" were initiated, now I transmit something wide banded on "PPT" and tone on "tune".

Glad you got it working on the MAC.  I never had a problem with FreeDV on the MAC or Linux (or on a MAC running Linux!!)

Win 7 & 10 was ok but Win11 really tested me!  (it still tests me!) But I even have it working ok now.

Let me know if you'd like to try it on 40 or 75m....  Redding to Western Wa is never a problem in the evenings.

And I don't have a great antenna on 20 but I can even work NORCAL on 20m during certain times of the day!

That'd be awesome!!  Might you have DMR?

Jason,

I don't have DMR, no experience with it.  What little I do know about it is that it may not be suitable for HF radio operations due to wide bandwidth.

It's more for VHF/UHF repeaters and connection with the internet isn't it?

I am sure I am showing my ignorance here!

Cheers,

Rick

No worries.  DMR is kind of silly when you think about it, the need for three devices, a radio, a hotspot, internet device, to use it?  If you did have DMR, I was going to suggest using it to coordinate a QSO over FreeDV.  Essentially it is radio over internet, or radio to radio with or without a repeater that may or may not be connected to the internet.  Sounds like you have an idea of it.

I am still interested in making a QSO.  I am relatively new to HF, so I don't have a very good feel for daytime operations.  You had mentioned 75 meter, but my amp freaks out using FreeDV on that band.  I have a question and maybe you can answer it?  My end fed antenna, when using FT8 does 80 to 10 meter does very well, never going over 2:1 SWR, but when I use FreeDV it trips my amp.  Is this because FreeDV is wider banded compared to FT8?  Thank you.

It really depends on what kind of amp it is.

Most solid state amps  will "trip" when the reflected power exceeds a certain amount.  I have a Mercury III and if the reflected power exceeds around 100W (at 1200w output) it will trip.

The peak power with FreeDV on my Bird 43 Watt-meter (analog, average reading, heavily damped meter) will indicate around 200W when the amp is putting out 700W (max allowable for the Mercury III)

Also, at high power, with any end fed antenna, you run the risk of getting RFI back into literally "everything" .

Try putting some wire on the ground.  I ran a 203ft end-fed wire for many years and ran up to around 1000W using an automatic tuner at the driven end of the wire.  I also found my best performance (and least RFI everywhere) was when I made up a ground radial system using (5) 135ft  pieces of old CATV coaxial cable on the ground going out radially.  Ground rods don't cut it at all.  They're nearly useless.

I talk to a friend of mine in Spokane, WA using FreeDV  from about 15miles east of Tacoma all the time on 40m,  both of us running only 15-20w and we've done it using 5w too.

I've also talked to another friend in Northern Oregon on 75m at night summer time static S-9+  running 5w on both ends.....so it can be easily done!

We're on 7188 right now! (1540 PDT)

Every so often I am getting you guys.  Heard something about a lady working in the garden?

I was talking to some of the old timers around here and they say HF is pretty hard during the day?

40m in the PNW pretty much sucks during the day.
It gets better later in the afternoon

75m is good in the early morning prior to about 0700 or so and gets progressively worse by 0930 or so but not bad right at dusk and a little later until it goes really long.
