Hi Mooneer,

i'm desperate, cause of this message by starting FreeDV under LINUX Mint:

"./src/common/unichar.cpp(62): assert ""Assert failure"" failed in ToHi8bit(): character cannot be converted to single byte"

Tried to restore from an older version, but with no succsess. Do you have any idea, what causes this problem?

Hi Stefan,

What's the output of "env | grep LANG" on your machine? I have the following in my Linux Mint test environment and I'm not currently seeing that message:

(rade-venv) mooneer@mooneer-virtual-machine:~/freedv-gui/build_linux$ env | grep LANG
LANGUAGE=en_US
GDM_LANG=en_US
LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Hi Stefan,

Are you able to run FreeDV in gdb and produce a backtrace when you get that message? Unfortunately I tried including those environment variables and that didn't seem to let me reproduce the issue. It kinda sounds like something is going wrong somewhere during conversion to/from UTF-8 (likely due to something coming in from FreeDV Reporter but it could be from somewhere else, too).

Hi Mooneer,

Unfortunately I am not a programmer and I am not very familiar with LINUX.
The only thing I can say is that this problem occurred after a FreeDV update.
The notebook I'm using is set up exclusively for FreeDV and that's the only (third party) software installed.
So maybe a complete uninstall (but how?) would help?

Hi Stefan,

You can try removing/renaming your ~/.freedv file and seeing if that helps. (Also, can you email that to me off-list before you do? This is in case there's something in there that's triggering the error you're getting.)
