I posted about this some time ago when I discovered the appImage does
not provide alsa <port audio> support, but I can't find that post &
reply(s.) The latest version also lacks alsa support. But for the life
of me, I thought the current stable (from Mint/Ubuntu) did, but it also
lacks support which leaves me SOL for joining the activity for any of
the modes.

Is alsa permanently removed for future releases?

Thanks all, 73

Hi Jaye,

FreeDV itself still has support for PortAudio but you'll need to compile it yourself, not use the AppImage. (In most cases, using pipewire/PulseAudio is much better, hence why it's how the AppImage is typically released.) In theory you can build your own AppImage by compiling FreeDV accordingly and then running the generation script inside the appimage/ folder, but this admittedly isn't documented well.

BTW for anyone else who may be interested in an AppImage with PortAudio instead/in addition to pipewire and PulseAudio, I recommend submitting a feature request (https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/issues/new?template=feature_request.yml) so that the team can discuss further.

Thanks,

Have you tried building this way rather than using an appimage?

https://github.com/barjac/freedv-rade-build

If you have any problems please open an issue in that project and I will
try to help.
