This is JH0PCF Kanda.

A friend who installed the Windows version of FreeDV 2.1.0 reported that it wasn't working properly.

Based on the symptoms, it appears that CAT communication isn't working properly.

I've attached the email from my friend.

Regarding the 2.1.0 malfunction.

After starting FreeDV, I can press [Start Modem] and send and receive, but when I press [Stop Modem], the display doesn't change to [Start Modem] and I can't press [Start Modem] again.

The text on the [Stop Modem] button remains grayed out, so it seems to be stuck on the shutdown process from online to standby.

I can change the frequency and configure settings from Tools, so FreeDV itself is working.

If I exit and restart FreeDV, I can press [Start Modem] again.

The operating system is Windows 11 Home 25H2.

The Visual C++ Redistributable Package was updated to the latest version when installing 2.1.0.
I tried running rade-setup.bat, but there was no change.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Kanda,

Is there any difference if CAT control is disabled, or does FreeDV still lock up if your friend pushes Stop Modem?

Thanks,

Is it possible to perform a Test PTT in CAT?
When the [Stop Modem] button is grayed out,
you can start transmitting by selecting [Test PTT] in [CAT and PTT Config].

>Is the radio connected to the computer with a cable without a relay?
The radio (IC-7300) is connected to the computer's USB hub.

>Are there any other software running?
I tried using only FreeDV, but the result was the same.
CPU usage is around 10-20% for FreeDV.

Note that in 700D mode, it returns to [Start Modem], so this is a problem specific to RADE mode.

Is there a way to connect the radio WITHOUT using the USB hub? Directly connect the radio to the computer.

I have found EVERY single time, that any radio connected to a USB hub, even if it’s powered, WILL indeed fail frequently with a device that is very data intensive for back and forth data transfers, like a radio.

I see this a lot as well with programming hand held radios too.

It seems that nearly every other device works just great with them, as long as there’s not a lot of input and output data taking place.

Keyboards and mice, hard drives, usb sticks, and other things seem to work quite fine. But sadly, radios fall apart very quickly through a hub.

I often wonder if it’s an RF thing making them more sensitive, but I have never found the true source of the issue.

But besides that, here’s a very nice document for the 7300 and FreeDV that Mike-WA2TOP put together that seems to really help a lot for that radio.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

Hi Kanda,

To clarify, your friend was able to actually go into Tools->CAT and PTT Config while the modem is stopping, right? I tried to test (albeit on macOS and not Windows) and it stayed grayed out for me until the modem fully stopped.

Also, has your friend tried plugging the radio directly into the computer instead of a hub per Walter's last email?

Thanks,
