Tindie says SM1000 back in stock

I got an email this morning from Tindie telling me that the SM1000 adapter is back in stock, but I can't tell if there were changes in the chipset that caused these to originally go out of stock. Is it still a good idea to order one of these or should I wait for the ESP based adapter that Mooneer is working on? Is there updated firmware for the SM1000 that covers all of the current modes?

Thanks

There is some information here about the SM1000:

https://github.com/drowe67/codec2/blob/main/stm32/doc/sm1000_manual.md

this manual was updated a couple of months ago so it is current in
terms of modes.

I will let Mooneer comment on the ezDV project status, it's being
developed as we speak.

Hi all,

Right now we're testing the ezDV firmware and fixing various bugs and quality of life things that get uncovered. We might have some good news soon on it going on sale, so stay tuned :)

As for the SM1000, the current firmware supports 700D, E and 1600, much like ezDV. In case the latest ones that are shipping don't have the latest flashed, it should be fairly straightforward to do so.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

From the manual:
"The SM1000 hardware was developed by David Rowe VK5DGR and Rick Barnich KA8BMA."

Update:
Rick's current callsign is K8BMA.

I have not checked the schematic, however I don't think there were any changes in the chip set. The problem was availability of the existing component(s). I don't believe "all" the modes will ever be supported due to limited processor and memory available. However, what it does support are the popular ones and does a very good job of that.

I can confirm that the SM1000 firmware is fairly straightforward to
update. I bought my SM1000 when they first came out, with the original
FreeDV 1600 only firmware. I updated it to support 700D several years
ago, and don't recall any issues.

The only problem I have encountered with my SM1000 is that it's impossible to use the modular jack in the back for connecting to my rig. You must use individual push in mini phone plugs for each connection. That works for a while, until the cheap thin wires break off. Then it's back to rewiring again. For whatever reason, the internal header appears not to be connected to anything on the circuit board. It's soldered to the board but thats about it. I've tried to use the cat5 modular jack several times but it never worked. It's a shame that such a nice piece of gear as such cannot be more convenient for the operator.

Other than that, the SM1000 performs perfectly, eliminating the need for a PC.

Best regards,

Gary, K7EK

Hi Gary,

The pins on one side of the jumper have to be attached to pins on the other side for the RJ45 jack to work. I will admit that this could be documented a bit better, though. We'll evaluate ways of improving the documentation to make the SM1000 easier to set up.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

I understand that, however after installing jumpers from one side of the header to the other multiple times, it did not work. It appears that there is no continuity from the circuit board to the inside row of the header. There is, however,  continuity from the outside row to the CAT5. The idea is novel, much like the configuration jumpers in SignaLink radio/computer interfaces.  I am tempted to hard wire the CAT5 jack to the various board connections, bypassing the header altogether. It would really be nice to have a single cable from the modular jack to the radio instead of multiple cables with mini phone plugs, which are all potential points of failure. Oh well.

Best regards,

Gary,  K7EK

Hi Gary,

It may be worth reflowing the inside pins on the jumper and seeing if that helps. For my own SM1000, at least, the jumper block worked fine (albeit a bit fiddly since the holes are smaller than usual).

For others with SM1000s, did you have issues similar to Gary's? I want to make sure there wasn't some sort of problem with an individual batch.

Thanks,

I’ll pull mine out (it’s in storage) this weekend. I never got the RJ to work either, but the jacks worked fine.

I’d have preferred even a (single) DB9 for connectivity, as I wanted it for the DV capabilities, but with zero user interaction. The various types and positioning of jacks didn’t make sense to me. Having interfaces on 4 sides of the unit isn’t integrator friendly. Rather than relocate things, I just shelved it.

I'm pretty sure I got the RJ-45 working with my IC-7000.

Mine works fine! Don't forget that there are 3 isolated earths that you may need to jumper together. This is all detailed in the manual.
