This month the Wireless Institute of Australia published my article about FreeDV titled "The time has come for digital voice on the HF bands".

They've kindly decided to make the article free to read via: https://www.wia.org.au/members/armag/2025/november/

It's a mix of technical how it works and a getting started guide.

Well done Peter.

That should catch a lot of attention nicely.

I guess it depends on the radio environment you have to work with.

Ie.. If you have a Flex 6000, 8000 or Aurora series, and you implement the Raspberry Pi Hybrid solution, then you can use Flex’s SmartLink solution on a PC, or a simple Ipad or Apple Cell Phone and do FreeDV remote extremely easily.

I’m sure there may be other remote radio solutions out there, but you’d be hard pressed to find a simpler solution that the Flex implementation.

All the best,

Hi Dewaine,

Do you mean operating a radio remotely and using the FreeDV application with it? What radio are you currently using? Most modern ones have some sort of remote solution available (either natively or via something like RemoteTx (https://remotetx.net/).

Thanks,

Hi I am in a seniors building.  I do have an I pad. I don't know if my Kenwood 440 will do remote. I also have a raspberry pi 3  and a 2 . So there we have it.

Dewaine,

Absolutely. But I would not classify it as easy in some cases.  Every setup can be vastly different so there is not one solution that fits all. Some rigs may offer it natively.
Not so much in my case.

I am running my Xiegu G90 rig remotely from my Android 16 phone. A windows 10 laptop is the host and controller for the rig.

I my particular case I accomplish this via:

1. Rig "control" laptop (Intel i7 W10) that is running FLRig 1.46 set up for a real com port to the G90. and then the FreeDV app on same machine connects to it via localhost:12345

2. The remote is handled through a remote desktop app called Rustdesk. I have gotten this to work with a Win11 Tablet and an android 16 phone with Bluetooth headphones, and the phone's built in mic.

3. The magic sauce varies, but the main things seem to be to download a VB Cable (virtual audio in and out) (thanks Mooneer for this tip) and setup FreeDV to use those for the "to computer speakers", and the " from mic to FreeDV" settings. Secondly, for all audio devices in play, get to the "original" sound devices settings ( good luck but they are in there somewhere) and under advanced tab deselect "allow windows to take exclusive control". Thirdly, make sure all devices are set to 48000 bit rate.

Rustdesk has a audio chat mode that must be invoked. However, it has to be acknowledged from the host machine by a "real" local console user. SO, I had to install AutoHotKey and make a simple script the clicks the "Accept" button when I launch the script remotely.

In theory a Bluetooth boom mic headset could be used, but I've issue I've found is the live mic continually gets sent back to the remote machine. Workaround is to press the mic Mute button on the headset till needed, and the spkr mute during transmit or it gets distracting. I need to find a better solution.

 It's usable but clunky.

TeamViewer might work better, (but yikes it has gotten fairly convoluted to setup) and there are also outboard apps that only send mic audio to the host that I am investigating.

Rustdesk has a public server still afaik but I self host which is another rabbit hole dive into a Linux VPS install

Be prepared for getting into some serious weeds and time commitment.

 Good luck!

Scott
