Hi All -

I listened on 20m for about 4 hours Saturday afternoon (EST).

The only station that I successfully decoded was WA2TOP at about 75%.

I saw several other stations on my Flexradio waterfall that clearly had the "Freedv shape" that weren't decoded.

WA8TOP showed a SNR on the Freedv main screen of about +4 db. The documentation states that +12 db is what is really required.

The waterfall on the Freedv screen looked like a stream of shredded wheat going by. I was on several years ago with a much better antenna (3-element beam vs dipole) and the audio streams were very clear.

My conclusion is I need a better antenna and/or less noise to use (decode) Freedv.

Hi Bob,

What mode were you using? Minimum SNRs for the various modes are listed at https://github.com/drowe67/codec2/blob/master/README_freedv.md; if there's something elsewhere in the documentation that conflicts with that README, I can go ahead and correct it accordingly.

Thanks,

Mooneer -

First Question -

I wasn't sure what mode was being used so I set the check box to decode all modes.

Second Question -

The 12db I mentioned is found in the undated pdf file at link http://rowetel.com/downloads/freedv/manual_appendix_g4abp_v1.0.pdf on page 7. The link is in the documentation section of the Freedv main webpage

When I was tracking down where I saw the 12db figure, I see this figure is contradicted in other documentation.

I didn't notice if the Freedv main screen indicates what mode is currently being decoded. If it does, it would highlight the correct button in the Mode section on the right of the screen.  Whatever mode WA2TOP was using, as I mentioned, the SNR was bouncing around +4db for about 75% copy.

You can see this in the Sync box on the left, when 'Modem' is green
you have sync and the Mode below it tells you which one is in sync as
it knows the unique sync word it has decoded.

That button selects the mode that you transmit, currently choosing the
Tx mode is a manual process. This might change in future, but as yet
automatic mode selection/optimisation is not yet available.

Hi Bob,

I took a look at that file and it appears to have originally been written for FreeDV 1.4. There have been significant improvements in the codec since then, so I'll go ahead and mark on the website that it was written for that version.

Thanks,
