Could not open serial port /dev/tty.usbmodem142201.
Please ensure that you have permission to access the port.

Didn't think I had to do this with a MAC.

In Linux, I only had to add "DIALOUT" permissions to my user name.

In WIndows The administrative user already has the permissions by default.  In this Mac, It worked before, but not now.

What could have changed?

Richards-MacBook-Pro:~ rick$ cd /dev
Richards-MacBook-Pro:dev rick$ ls
afsc_type5 ptyt0 ttyq8
auditpipe ptyt1 ttyq9
auditsessions ptyt2 ttyqa
autofs ptyt3 ttyqb
autofs_control ptyt4 ttyqc
autofs_homedirmounter ptyt5 ttyqd
autofs_notrigger ptyt6 ttyqe
autofs_nowait ptyt7 ttyqf
bpf0 ptyt8 ttyr0
bpf1 ptyt9 ttyr1
bpf2 ptyta ttyr2
bpf3 ptytb ttyr3
console ptytc ttyr4
cu.usbmodem141201 ptytd ttyr5
cu.usbmodem141203 ptyte ttyr6

I would not expect the permissions to use the USB ports to change on their own

I've tried different cables too, so I don't think I have a bad USB cable

Hi Rick,

For some reason, macOS doesn't like the tty version of the serial port. FreeDV filters out the tty versions in the PTT configuration for this reason. If you choose /dev/cu.usbmodem141201 instead, you shouldn't have problems.

Thanks,

Thanks for the quick reply Mooneer.

I actually already had the port as "cu.usbmodem14201" initially, so I switched it to tty and then back

Neither works at all.

I even tried rebooting the computer, removing the entire package and downloading/reinstalling and got the same result.

Not sure what to do next.  I may try going back to the previous version and see if that makes a difference.

Well,

I have 2 choices of USB ports selections with the MAC.  /dev/cu.usbmodem14201 and 14203

"201" was the physical  USB port on the left and 203 was the one on the right (side of the Macbook.....there's only 2 USB sockets on this thing)

Using the left USB port, I couldn't get the software to connect to it at all using either 14201 or 14203

But now,   I can use the right side port using 14203 and it connects.

I didn't think this was a critical choice.  I thought the software (or the MAC  OS ) would simply "find" the USB port whichever was required to connect.

For a while I thought I had a couple of bad cables...

Now I am not very sure what was wrong but it's working now.

Hi Rick,

It shouldn't matter what side you plug into, either. I'm not fully sure why it would in your case. Maybe it's some sort of driver issue or an issue on the radio/interface side? Glad it's working in any case.

Thanks,

Yeah,

I didn't think so either.  I was having a similar problem with the Win10 HP laptop and that problem seems to be more lrelated to actual wear and tear in teh actual socket

I also found the following info on using FLDIGI concerning the MAC

I'll say up front that I haven't read through ALL of the FreeDV manual so this info may be mentioned there .

If it isn't, it might be a good idea to add a section on it..

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the URLs describing the issue. I added a new issue (https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/issues/543) to update the user manual.

That said, those pages are talking more about audio drivers and not the serial port side of things. I don't know if there's a similar workaround for the latter. Perhaps others may have info on that?

Thanks,
