Hi all,

FreeDV versions 1.8.8 / 1.8.9-20230321 have been released. (Note: the latter is the same as 1.8.8 except for the inclusion of 2020C mode.) Version 1.8.8 contains the following:

1. Bugfixes:
    * Resolve compile failure in EasySetupDialog on openSUSE. (PR #344)
    * Prevent Mode box from auto-resizing to avoid unexpected movement of other controls. (PR #347)
2. Build system:
    * CPack: Properly handle the case where FREEDV_HASH doesn't exist. (PR #345)
3. Enhancements:
    * Show friendlier error if serial ports can't be opened. (PR #348)
    * Use same VFO retrieval mechanism for PTT as with frequency sync. (PR #350)
    * Tweak PSK Reporter handling to report received callsigns more quickly. (PR #352)

Hello Mooneer,

I can only get up to 1.8.7 to work on my Windows 11 PC.  When I try 1.88 and 1.8.9-devel, the Start button doesn’t get the waterfall moving and the program freezes for some reason.  Using the same settings as with 1.8.7.  FTdx-10 rig.  PC is home brew MSI Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon with Intel i9 8-Core running at a constant 5Ghz with 32GB of Ram.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

As a test, try disabling PSK Reporter support (Tools->Options->Reporting). There were changes in there between 1.8.8-devel and 1.8.8.

Thanks,

Hi John,

It's possible that there was a Hamlib change that affected how the version behaves. Is it able to start if you disable Hamlib via Tools->PTT Config? If not, we might need to debug it further.

Thanks,

Hello Mooneer,

Yes, I am able to get the waterfall after clicking on START, if I disable hamlib.

It might be worth trying the daily hamlib builds available here:

https://n0nb.users.sourceforge.net/

for Windows you need to download this file:

https://n0nb.users.sourceforge.net/dll64/libhamlib-4.dll

and then use it to replace the existing file of the same name on your
PC, it should be found in a sub-directory of C:\WSJTX

If this fixes the problem it shows that the most recent WSJTX release
hamlib dll and your radio are not fully compatible.

Unfortunately, with the more recent versions of FreeDV, hamlib is compiled statically into the Windows binaries.

Anyway, I did notice this FTDX10 related change in the hamlib repo that occurred after 1.8.8-devel: https://github.com/Hamlib/Hamlib/commit/aeb2692b4203f5b354cd667455f862af31821a66. I wouldn't think it'd cause issues but if anyone else is having problems with a FTDX10, I can try generating a new build with an earlier hamlib.

Hi John,

Let me know if v1.8.8.1 works any better for you. In my testing with the Hermes Lite 2 and Thetis, I was able to duplicate another issue someone found where setting the emulation to TS-2000 caused PTT to stop working but it worked fine with Thetis set to emulate a TS-480. I suspect something between the latest official hamlib and the latest on their Git repo really messed things up across multiple radio types, hence the expedited release.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

Ah, I didn't notice that. So yes, scratch my suggestion (which works
for WSJTX).

Hamlib 4.5.5 is expected soon, I have the current git version of this
branch running on Fedora, it appears to work fine for my setup of
freedv. The master branch of Hamlib-4.6~git is often broken, I have
tried it but it's just not ready for prime time yet.

Yes, 1.8.8.1 works for me!  I also tried 1.8.9-devel, and it also works.

Thanks,

John

I tried version 1.8.9 devel ,  it worked fine in ftdx 10, i think something has changed in mic volume.

Hi Babis,

If it's been a while since you last tried FreeDV, there was a change in the Codec2 library a few releases ago that equalized the peak power output across most of the available modes. You should be able to adjust the TX Attenuation slider as appropriate (possibly along with any OS or radio level audio controls) for the desired power.

On the other hand, if you're referring to the volume of the microphone that you're using with FreeDV, I'd also double check any filters you may have set up in the Tools menu. The handling of the filters changed a bit ago as well (due to bugs and the desire to end the restrictions on device sample rates), so that may be a possible contributor.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ
