Mooneer,
I just downloaded and installed v1.9.9.2 and when I tried to set  up the PTT/CAT, every time I pushed the TEST button, the program just running (continuous messages in the debug window) and when I tried to cancel it, it never stopped. Ultimately, it crashed which left me to open it again and redo all of the settings with a change or changes that might be correct. If not, I could not cancel the test or do anything until it crashed again. Makes it tough to get to the final solution.
I am using Windows 10 64 bit OS.
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred,

What radio are you trying to use with FreeDV? Do you get similar results if you try using Tools->Easy Setup to set up CAT control instead?

Thanks,

Mooneer,
I was using the easy setup mode and it was the IC9700.
I then moved over to my IC 705 using a different laptopto set it up using easy tools. I guessed correctly on the COM port the first time so I don't know what would have happened if I had picked the wrong com port. I will try selecting the wrong com port and see what happens. The connection to the IC9700 on the original laptop was through a USB hub. The connection to the IC 705 was direct from the second laptop itself.

Hi Fred,

Let me know how it goes when you try using the incorrect COM port. It sounds like there's definitely an issue on the PTT Config dialog but not fully sure with Easy Setup yet. Seems like there's more investigation to be done for sure.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

Hi all,

I can trigger this bug on my IC-705 using the GPS port (instead of the CI-V one). I think this is at least in part a Hamlib problem based on some further investigation that I did. I'll submit a bug to the Hamlib project and work on this in the background, time permitting.

Thanks,

Mooneer,
I did run the experiment where I selected the incorrect com port on the IC 705 and the same problem occurred. I was unable to cancel it once I started the PTT test. I also tried hitting the space bar several times as suggested by Jose but that didn't cancel it either.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the confirmation. I created https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/issues/742 and linked the corresponding Hamlib bug there, so we'll see how that goes.

Thanks,

Mike committed a fix for this earlier, essentially it limits the number
of retries before returning.

Hi Brian,

Yeah, I saw that, but this is likely a fix that's going to be for Hamlib 4.6 (whenever it gets released); I don't know if he's planning a Hamlib 4.5.6 or not for bugfixes like this one.

Thanks,

There is a hamlib-4.5.6 branch, but it's been dead for a long time now.
If memory serves Mike said that it was too difficult to backport enough
of the hamlib-4.6 fixes to it, hence it being left unfinished.

Yes, it's a bit awkward to use the development branch, but the focus for
hamlib seems to be WSJT-X and little else so it's important to try to
use it with other software to catch problems as early as possible.

I have been using hamlib-4.6~git for more than 18 months now (local
build sub-version is >500 now) and it mostly works for Kenwood and Icom
with any bad breakage fixed up within a day or two.

Hi Brian,

There were a few versions of FreeDV a while ago that used 4.6 but it actually caused issues with a few people, so I had to backtrack to 4.5.5. If the former is more stable now, maybe we can revisit this. Does WSJT-X currently provide 4.6 when you download recent versions from their website?

Thanks,

I think the current development versions of WSJT-X includes a
hamlib-4.6~git snapshot version but just not sure which snapshot ;-)

There is also a way to change the dll in use from within WSJT-X now, at
least in Uwe DG9YCB's improved versions available here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/wsjt-x-improved/

Uwe is one of the WSJT-X development team, it is likely his
improvements will be in the official K1JT version in the future.

There is a daily hamlib Windows dll build and source snapshot here:

https://n0nb.users.sourceforge.net/

At the moment it seems stable here, but of course I don't have a huge
number of suitable radios to test with.

Mike W9MDB always complains that he fixes hundreds of problems and then
as soon as a new WSJT-X is released he gets hundreds of new bug reports
because few people run the hamlib master branch to help with the
development process.

The current bug list for hamlib-4.6 is here:

https://github.com/Hamlib/Hamlib/milestone/15

but it tends to grow and shrink every few days/weeks and as the nominal
release date is 7 months ago it's definitely a moving target.

I don't really know how to square this particular circle, most people
just want to use the software without thinking about how it gets to be
polished.

Hi Brian,

It should be possible to replace libhamlib-4.dll in your FreeDV folder with the one from 4.6 without affecting anything, so it might be okay to just suggest that if there are additional problems found with 4.5.5 in the future.

BTW I don't think the latest change to fix this worked, so I pinged Mike again.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

I would agree with that, although a lot of people seem to find it
difficult to do.

OK, we'll have to see what he does to fix it, but I see you have
committed a change to freedv as well.

Hi Brian,

Yep, I have a change ready to go that adds a (reasonable IMO) timeout when Hamlib attempts to connect to the radio. This should hopefully avoid the original issue for those using Hamlib 4.6 and above.

Thanks,
