Hi all
I'll start by saying what an amazing mode FreeDV RADE is. Everyone here in New Zealand who has joined our weekly Otago Branch 30 NZART ZL4AA DV net over the last 18 months has been staggered by the "armchair copy" we have over a noisy HF band. Hats off to the entire team of developers who have put the countless hours into making this mode fantastic over the years. Much appreciated!
Now on to the other reason for my email... a feature request. This is likely aimed at you, Mooneer. You mentioned in the June 2026 blog this...
"
One major bug that was resolved (or at least improved) was related to
how users’ callsigns are transmitted. For RADE, there’s a packet that’s
sent before transitioning from TX to RX; I had noticed during testing
locally that this seemed to be cut off, preventing proper decode of the
packet on the receive side. We had tried to avoid this in the past by
calculating a delay based on CAT control responses, but this was
apparently not sufficient. After experimentation, I changed this to a
static delay and was able to consistently transmit this packet with my
setup"
An issue we have when we hold the weekly net, is one or two operators do not use an internet connection. While that is fine and we all know when they have checked-in etc, what would be really useful is a way of seeing when they are transmitting at the beginning of their over.
Can their callsign packet be sent at the start of the over, in addition to the end which appears in the "last heard with signal report" list?
Would it be possible to add a checkbox into the settings that could enable adding the no-internet callsign (in red) to the reporter window while transmitting only? I appreciate this would not work for receive and should simply be removed again in real time.
Anyway, I would be
interested to hear others thoughts on this.
Keep up the good work!
