Hello All,
I’m hoping someone can help get over a hurdle I’ve reached installing FreeDV for the first time. I’m new to digital voice but not to digital modes.

My problem:  when I try to start the modem after FreeDV has loaded, I receive an error box:
“Microphone permissions must be granted to FreeDV for it to function properly”.
The modem doesn’t load and I can’t progress.

My setup:
Windows 8.1 64bit
FreeDV 2.1.0
Rig is a K3 - using it’s internal sound card, PC sound card and external USB mike.
All sound devices are functioning correctly in other programmes.

I CAN connect the rig to FreeDV and successfully PTT via CAT.

I have uninstalled and then re-installed FreeDV again - the error persists.
I tried removing the USB mike and trying the setup in receive only mode - the error.                                                  persists

Is there a resolution to this permissions issue?.  Having a poke around, I can’t see that FreeDV doesn’t have permissions - there’s nothing to prevent it having permissions to access the microphones when I dig into the PC settings.

Any help much appreciated.

Hope to have DV contact with you soon!?

Hi John,

We officially only support Windows 10 and later (this is due to the version of Python included in FreeDV not supporting anything earlier). However, what you can try is to create the following Registry key if it's not already there:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone

and inside, create a string value named "Value" with the value "Allow". Hope this helps!

Thanks,

Many thanks for your reply and helpful advice, Mooneer. This was indeed the solution and I’m now up and running and have had my first DV QSO. Amazing!
