I am using websdr to listen on my computer (windows 10 OS). Is there a way to configure the audio so the freedv will have the audio input it needs to decode?  I tried and could not get any audio input at all.

I've done it in Linux, I think one way to do it in Win10 is a program called "Virtual Audio Cable". You send the websdr output to that, and the other end to "from the radio" in FreeDV.

Travis Tabbal , thanks, but that is $30 and I really don't have the $ for that right now and the uninterrupted 'trial' period is only 1/2 hour. Hardly long enough for me to configure it, let alone evaluate it for freeDV.

I do have a SignaLink USB. Is there a way to use it to at least try for freeDV with web SDR?

I use VB-Cable on my MacBook Pro for my Hermes Lite 2 SDR and it works well for me for that purpose. I imagine it'd work fine for WebSDR use too. There's a Windows version that I recently installed in a VM as well.  It's "donationware", so if it ends up working out for you, you can always send some money towards the author at some point in the future.

Here's a PDF showing how to use VB-Cable to monitor FreeDV signals from WebSDR or KiwiSDR receivers.  The link is here.

The PDF describes FreeDV+ (FreeDV with video), but the instructions are easily adapted for FreeDV.

There's a free version down the page a bit. It looks like VB-Cable is another one with a free version. I doubt the hardware will help you unless you can configure it for "loopback" to send the audio back into the system.

It works well with webSDRs. I've used VBCable to decode FreeDV from web
SDRs.

    Thanks everybody.

I have installed VB Cable and have not heard anything on websdr that sounded like DV when I looked for it. I may try listening for DV on websdr tomorrow. Otherwise, I will try to get someone locally to transmit on DV and see if I can get it to work with the SDR I have.

Anyway, once again. Thanks to everyone that has answered my question.

Give a listen around 14.236 usb.

We are usually on and off there, all day, and into the early evening before 20m dies out.

Please feel free to ping me directly, if you need me to send up a signal while your watching it.

FreeDV1.5.2 had worked connecting the webSDR(SDR.hu) with VAC(virtual audio cable) on the windows10 before 3/3/ 2021.  But it hasn’t work since 3/8 after updating windows.

The version of my windows is “Windows 10 pro 20H2”.   However it works fine on the windows 7 of the other PC which is not updated since several years ago.  Is there someone who has such kind of information?   This problem happens when the other SDRs are used, such as the SDRcosole V3 with SDRplay and the PowerSDR with Redpitaya.

Is it possible that the VAC devices need to be recreated using the tool that came with it (along with updating the FreeDV audio configuration as appropriate)?

@Travis Tabbal
Dear Travis,
let come back on your comment from the 20.12.2020, 21:30 (see above)
I like to ask for your experience and the details for the linux-platform, where you redirected the audio.

I suggest, you are using pulse audio for that? (With pavucontrol redirection is an excellent option) -- but freedv does not work together with pulse)

can you please give some more details of your arrangement under linux? (What linux audiosystem are you using, how do you redirect the audio, is there a link existing to read more details on your arrangement?

Thanks in advance

HI Michael,

On 6 Feb Mooneer demonstrated FreeDV working with pulse audio, and posted the configuration tested to this list for comment.

We have also logged this experiment on the FreeDV GitHub issues list:

  https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/issues/16

Here is how you can help: Using a fresh build of the latest freedv-gui/master (4409e66):

1. Does this experiment work for you?

2. Is this configuration different from what you are trying to achieve with FreeDV and pulse audio?  If so, please clearly explain the configuration you are trying to use, preferably on the GitHub issue linked above.

Dear Mooneer K6AQ,

Thank you for your advice. I fixed the problem by doing various things including re-install of VAC and FreeDV.  Anyway, I found the demodulation though WebSDR varies one browser to another. The Fire Fox is the best among the IE,Edge and Google Chrome. What do you think?

Hi Shingo,

I haven't done detailed browser testing but I have noticed that WebSDR seems to be better than KiwiSDR in general (less latency, better audio quality, etc.) Others on this list hopefully might have better insight.

Thanks,

1 today I got the newest pull and  executed "build_linux.sh"
2 after  correction of compile error I sstarted and ended in the caudio configuration dialog -- no function
3 I will describe details of my steps and result in the github
Sorry to state: Still no success
