Hi all,

Does anyone know how can I mute the PC Speaker when I TX? I get feedback when I TX.
I use WIndows 7 at this end for FreeDV.

Are you sure it's Audio feedback - not RF ingression? If the latter add
a lot of ferrite rings on to the audio cables.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for reply. Yes I am sure it isn't RF feedback because it also happens when my radio is turned off.

Any ideas?

In Windows 7, the recording devices have a property that is labeled as "Listen to this device". Make sure it's unchecked.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for suggestion. It is already unchecked. If I check it, things are really loud, hi hi hi!!
Not sure what am I doing wrong!

Hmm,

When I click "Analogue" and then PTT, I can't hear my own voice from the PC speakers.
Funny isn't it? I must be doing something wrong I think. Not sure what it is though.

Hi Demetre,

It probably has something to do with the "Audio" settings, which can be
extremely tricky on freeDV. Probably best play around with them until it
is right. I for instance had to swap around the mic and headphone plugs
at the USB sound-dongle - nothing else would work. I then routed the TX
output to "C-Media Wave Device" ID: 5. Complete set-up on

Hi Waldis,

Thanks for reply. I used my SKYPEPHONE which has it's own USB soundcard built in and I don't have any problems now. Funny but when I used the loudspeaker and external mike with the default soundcard of my PC I could hear feedback. OK I must admit that the SKYPEPHONE has not got a great audio on receive but it works.

I wonder if we could arrange a LONGPATH sked sometime. I am QRV and I can work downunda easily via the LONGPATH.
If you are interested please post here. I can be QRV at 08.00z on 21.236 (let's say) on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for next wekk if you are interested.

Hi Demetre,

Sure we can try. LP to Europe is OK for me too. However the field
strengths encountered don't give me much hope that it will work in
freeDv. I have a few regular Eu contacts via LP on 20 and 30 but in
Olivia 8/250 and the field strength is just sufficient. 15m is normally
worse than 20m, But I'll come up on 21.236 on We and Th (Sa and Su
MAYBE) at 0800 UTC. Will make my presence known on qso.k7ve.org. Let's
hope condx are good!

OK Waldis,

In that case let's try on Wednesday between 07.30 - 08.30 UTC on 14,236 KHZ since it seems better.
I will be QRV on 14,236 KHZ and also on the site you mentioned.

Hi Demetre,

I agree. Today's 15m WSPR database shows only 1 contact Eu-VK with -27
at 5W. Add 10dB for 50W and it's still hopeless for freeDv.
So let's use 20m tomorrow as you said.

Being new to the group, I am trying to find time to view past posts.  This one caught my eye as I have what I call the 'echo' also. The echo was about a one second delay and really mind boggling.  I am using Windows XP, so this is not a Win7 problem.

Some USB sound dongles have mute buttons on them, but the USB jacks on my small desktop computer do not have enough clearance for me to use one.  So, I bought a iMic USB soundcard to use instead.  It does not have mute buttons.

I tried long and hard to resolve this in my computer lash-up, but still haven't found a cause.  Others have mentioned having the echo as well.

I gutted out a small metal project box I had, and installed a 3-cond jack and a DPDT switch on top to cut off the speaker sound when I am transmitting. I used a short length of shielded cable to connect to a 3 cond plug that plugs into the speaker jack on the USB soundcard.  In otherwords, the box with the cutoff switch is inserted between the USB soundcard and the speakers/phones.

In summary, if you have this problem, I would try the mute button on the USB dongle as a first solution, or build a cutoff switch box as I did, until the cause is found and corrected.

Use a relay instead ... switched from comport ptt (opto-coupler from rs232
switched relay ... relay contacts switch ptt and cut off audio to speakers)

Ps with such a box it could be possible to use only one soundcard but it is
difficult to set the levels correct both on tx and receive

(I don't know why 'me' is showing instead of my name).

I failed to mention that I know the delay is latency from the computer, but I don't know why we are hearing it on transmit.

Thanks,  I wasted hours trying to find a way to get rid of it, and it always showed the word 'change' behind it.  Google is different.  I haven't  made up my mind if I like it or not.

What I'd like to know now is;  Why do I always have to log in here to reply to a post that I received by email.  When I try to simply email back, it gets rejected.  Is this normal?

Thanks for the help,
Rich, n0ce

Are you replying from the same address that you subscribed with? I ask
because your "from" address is @arrl.net which is just a forwarder to
your real address.

I've found it doesn't necessarily have to be the same, it can be any
address that is registered with Google. Apologies in advance for the
images, but it's the easiest way to explain this.

If you go to http://groups.google.com you'll notice your name up the
top-right corner (see groups01.png). Click this, you'll notice a link
named "Account" (see groups02.png).

Following this link, you'll be taken to a page which amongst other
things, lists all the email addresses registered with your account (see
groups03.png). There is an 'Add' link where you can add additional
addresses as I have done.

You'll notice when I first came on here, I used the m...@vk4msl.yi.org
address, where it is technically registered. I found by accident that
my default identity, stu...@longlandclan.yi.org worked. By extension
this email address (at Gentoo) should also work, because it's attached
to the same Google account.

(Note that none of them are GMail addresses. I host my own email.)

Hi, and thanks to all who nailed it.

Yes, I am using an alias for my address.  I would not have thought of that as the cause.  I will change it.

Many thanks,

See my earlier email about adding a second email address to your Google
account.

Another route is to add a new identity to your email client. Not sure
what you use but mutt and Thunderbird (the two I use) both support this.
