I am trying to set up FreeDV with a Linux Mint computer. The program is installed and runs, and I have the CAT control set to HAMlib which seems to control the radio properly (frequencies are tracked, PTT works, etc.). Also the audio settings seem correct as I can occasionally hear FreeDV transmissions and I can see my own TX audio reflected in the “Fm MIC” view. Now here are the problems:

1. I only get occasional snippets of RX audio. A couple seconds long. Most of the time there is silence, even when I can see others transmitting on the FreeDV Reporter window.

2. The mode indicator at main window bottom starts out correctly showing “USB-D” then after a second reverts to “USB”. My radio is set to “USB-D”.

3. The manual says I should be able to “tune” by double-clicking in the waterfall window. Nothing happens when I click or double-click in the waterfall window.

4. Clcicking “Record” to record a voice keyer audio file doesn’t result in a playable file. It creates a .wav file, but no program (including FreeDV) is able to play it.

Are these known issues?

Hi there,

Re: (3)--this was actually disabled for RADE and the manual not yet updated. The manual will reflect this prior to the official 2.2.0 release.

Also, a few questions:

1. What kind of machine are you running FreeDV on? And what version of FreeDV are you using?
2. What radio are you using?
3. Is it possible to provide the generated .wav file so we can take a closer look?

Thanks,

I'm on Linux Mint 22.2 and am not seeing the problems you report
What's your CPU use like, it sounds a bit like the machine can't keep up in some way?

With the help of a fellow ham, I determined that signal propagation to my station wasn't sufficient to enable FreeDV to decode. When I get a strong enough signal, the audio is fine. This explains the audio issue I wrote about.  The other issues (#'s 2 and 4) are still unresolved.

I'm not sure if you received my previous email, but would it be possible to send that generated WAV file so I can take a look?

Mooneer, I am updating my system so it may be a day or two.  I deleted the non-working audio file, but can generate new (non-working_ one.

Sounds good, let me know once you've generated the new one.

Here is the new file. Recorded using the "record" button in main FreeDV window.

Does this AppImage work any better for you, by chance? (https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jf8ecapujjci8q396hxn4/FreeDV-2.2.0-dev-afbc-x86_64.AppImage?rlkey=7kdv668g5xepzpoqfgssgqs0t&dl=0) Making sure it's not a bug already fixed since 2.1.0.
