Folks:

I am getting an error when I try to set up the embedded sound card in my IC-7200.

In the Tools/Audio Config/From Radio section I set this:

Microphone (3- USB Audio CODEC  (5)

...which is the sound device for incoming audio on the 7200. When I press record two seconds I get:

Couldnt initialise Sound Device.

I get same behavior from the other half of the pair.

If I ignore the test errors and go ahead and hit start I get:

Sound Card 1 Open/Setup Error

Although there was some driver installation from ICOM and Silicon Labs, this audio driver appears to be a generic Microsoft driver.

Im not having any particular difficulties using a number of other digital mode software. And just to be clear I experience this behavior without any of the other digital modes software running.

Any help?

You would use the output from the radio for incoming and use the microphone on the radio for outgoing.

You would use a second sound source like a USB headset for the Tx audio.

If that is confusing I can screenshot - I use the 7600 no issues - same sound card interface.

Kelly:

Thank you for your suggestion, but I do understand that much. This is not my issue.

Im using a Logitech USB headset which passes the 2 second tests. Also "From radio" is supposed to be "Microphone". "To radio" is supposed to be "Speaker" because the polarity of soundcard IDs is wrt the computer not the radio. However, FreeDV recognizes soundcard polarity and doesnt offer the wrong polarity card side as available option for a particular slot so it is impossible to select the wrong side.

I also searched this archive and am aware that at least a few folks are using the IC-7200 successfully in this mode.

However, I am getting an initialization error.

I know you are so busy. Try (xaltro) at lunch. They are not open on the weekend. Mary from Gul's billing just called. I told her what is going on and asked her to see about writing off what you don't owe to dr. Gul. She is going to work on it.
Stay focused and breathe😘
Luv you, Sheila

Hello Robert,

I have an IC7200, and have just fired it up with FreeDV on a Windows
Vista laptop. On the Audio Config dialog "Rec 2s" bombs but when I
press "Start" FreeDV runs just fine.

I have attached a screen shot of my configuration. I tried a
receive-only configurations, and had the Transmit Tab devices both set
to "none".

The Device Manager says "USB Audio Codec", some sort of generic
Microsoft driver I think. It's quite old, dated 6/21/2006.

The failure to run the "Rec 2s" option is I think because the IC7200
hardware only supports mono, the test code tries to open the driver in
stereo mode. The run time code triggered by Start tries both modes
automatically. I'll take an action to fix the "Rec 2s" bug next week.

Cheers

David

David:

I went through the ritual of loading up sound card devices on just the receive path and it worked when I hit start (got errors here previously). I went back and added the transmit path and also didnt get the error have been getting when I hit start.

However when I hit PTT it locks up and I have to manually shut down the transmitter. I traced this one to being on 20 meters. Seems I have a little misdirected RF floating around the shack. I can very reliably knock my CAT port off line by keying the transmitter down to the neighborhood of a watt. And it comes back in just a couple of seconds after I lift. But FreeDV cant lift if the CAT port is gone. Doesnt happen on the other bands..Im headed down to GigaParts tomorrow to pick up some coax ferrites and something for the USB shield.

Mysteries solved, I hope. And see you on the bands....

Hello Robert and List,

Further to this I have modified the FreeDV audio setup dialog code so
that "Rec 2s" works OK with mono record devices such as my IC7200 on
Win32. Curiously the IC7200 appears as a stereo rec device under
Linux.

I also added similar code to handle mono devices for "Play 2s", but
can't test it s all my play devices are stereo.

It's been checked into SVN so it should be included in the next win32
release.

Cheers,

David

David:

Several programs I use with the IC-7200 seem to treat it as a stereo device. I would say notably JT-65-HF and FLDIGI. Having said that, I dont see (or hear) much evidence that the audio in left and right are different. JT-65-HF does show differential levels from time to time, but it could be measurement latency between left and right. My audio issues with FreeDV seem to be solved.

I also believe I have solved my RF issue on 20 meters. Other programs are doing CAT control properly on 20 meters now, including a hamlib program. Notably WSPR, FLRIG, PC-ALE, and Dxlabs Commander are all OK.

However, I now get no response what so ever from the rig when I do PTT on FreeDV. I have taken special pains to make sure no other program has captured the CAT port. I have even gone through a boot cycle or two and made sure FreeDV was first and only to connect.

Something I am curious about is the lack of a serial set up for the CAT port in FreeDV. All the other rig control software I have used to date require this to be filled in.

I am keeping the IC-7200 "fixed" to 9600 baud, because WSPR (another hamlib program) as well as some of the others, doesnt like higher rates and is sometimes troubled when the rig baud is set to "auto". PC-ALE likes19200 to get the optimal scan rate and also doesnt cope well with rig baud in "auto", but that setting isnt good for many of the others I use.

Might it be better to offer fixed serial parameters in the configuration UI? And if it is "auto" on the application side, the perhaps report the connection settings settled upon?

Also, you did say you have a 7200 and I am assuming it is working for you - how do you leave the rig baud set? The rig defaults, I believe, to auto. Just knowing your setup would probably help me limp on to the air. Offhand, double auto-negotiate doesnt sound like a particularly "safe" option to me.

I set the IC-7200 CIV Baud to "auto" and PTT started working correctly. So perhaps double auto-negotiatge is the only way here...

Hello Robert,

I checked my IC7200 and CIV is also set to auto. Worked first time using
the Hamlib PTT control option :-)

Cheers,
