Hi all,

This is the second preview release of FreeDV containing the new RADE mode. For more information about RADE's development, check out the blog posts on the FreeDV website:

* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-feb-2024/
* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-march-2024/
* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-april-2024/
* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-may-2024/
* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-june-2024/
* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-july-2024/
* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-august-2024/
* https://freedv.org/mooneers-freedv-update-august-2024/
* https://freedv.org/mooneers-freedv-update-september-2024/
* https://freedv.org/davids-freedv-update-september-2024/

Changes versus the first preview release:

* Signal to noise ratio (SNR) is now displayed while receiving RADE signals.
* Received signals are now reported to FreeDV Reporter (without callsigns) once per second. Once a callsign is received (at the end of the transmission), the callsign is reported to both FreeDV Reporter and PSK Reporter.
* Fixed bug preventing sync indicator from turning green with RADE.
* Visual Studio Redistributable is now installed if your PC does not already have it. (This is required for the Python packages FreeDV uses.)
* Fixed bug preventing Request QSY button from being enabled in RADE mode.
* RADE has been renamed to RADEV1 in the UI and FreeDV Reporter.
* macOS binaries are now signed and notarized, avoiding the need for the workaround in the previous build.
* Fixed issue causing FreeDV to segfault on exit when RADE is running.
* Python files are now precompiled to improve startup time.
* Core RADE code is now in C (versus Python).
* Uninstaller now fully cleans up after Python.
* Audio chain is cleaned up to improve audio quality.
* README has been updated to clarify Linux instructions and to provide a link to a script to auto-build with RADE support. (Thanks @barjac!)
* Maximum SNR displayed in the main window is now 40 dB to reflect real-world testing.
* "devel" in the version string is shortened to "dev" and incremented to "dev2" to reflect the second preview build.

Limitations:

* Multiple RX mode is not supported. If you choose RADE and push Start, that's the only mode you can work; you'll need to stop, choose another mode and start again to work FreeDV with the existing modes.
* Squelch cannot currently be disabled with RADE. It's unknown at this time whether disabling squelch is possible.
* Due to compilation problems, 2020/2020B modes are disabled.
* There is currently no Windows ARM build; this will hopefully be included in a future preview build. You may be able to use the 64-bit Intel/AMD Windows build in the meantime.
* Minimum hardware requirements haven't been fully outlined, so your system currently may not be able to use RADE. Future planned optimizations may improve this.

Other notes:

* The below builds are significantly bigger than previous releases. This is due to needing to include Python and the modules that RADE requires. Planned porting to C/C++ will eventually negate the need for Python.
* The Windows build includes Python but not the modules that RADE requires. As part of the install process, the version of Python built into FreeDV will go out to the internet to download the needed modules.
* As development is expected to happen quickly, these preview builds have a six month expiry date (currently July 30, 2025).
* 32-bit Windows is no longer supported due to its likely inability to work with RADE.

Thanks,

Hello Mooner,

Why is the download link so hard to find?  I am still looking for it... and can't find it.

I am unable to run the latest release running Windows 10.  The previous release worked great.
When the new version is started, Reporter opens with valid callsigns displayed. The main window also opens. But when I click Start, after a few seconds, the main window and the Reporter disappear.
I have removed all previous versions and restarted the computer after the latest installation. The latest installation completed without any errors.
Any debugging suggestions?

Hi Randy,

Can you send screenshots of your audio (both Receive and Transmit tabs) and your CAT/PTT control settings? I suspect something might have gotten screwed up somewhere, and just making sure those are correct will resolve your issue.

Thanks,

Appears to be working now, had to uncheck Hamlib.

My challenge is “microphone permissions” on Win 10. I have never had a permissions issue.

The thing is, FreeDV doesn’t show up, so I can’t figure out how to grant access. What changed between the previous version and this one?

Sadly, Win11 has become extremely invasive about everything.

It can be tamed, but only after a bit of work.

Hey Mat, it was great to work you on VarAC last Saturday, from our club’s station. I was showing them how to use VarAC, and they linked right up with you.

All the best,

But this is 10 Walt, not 11. I know how to deal with perms in 11.

Happy to help.

The link I provided says that it applies to Windows 10, FWIW. FreeDV is a desktop app so you should just need to choose the appropriate option to grant permissions to desktop apps.

Hi Mooneer

If I press start withe RADEV1 selected the program crashes with no warnings.
I have used the previous version released in Oct to decode RADE signals with no issues.

Using latest version dev2 the 700 and 1600 modes work as expected but if I press STOP select RADEV1 and then press START program immediately crashes with no warning!
This occurs whether RADEV1 is selected at initial start up or after I have played with the legacy modes.

OS WIN 10

Access is set to on…. But I continue to get the message. Reverting to the previous version of FreeDV works fine, the new version has the permission issue.

Windows 10, FlexRadio 6300  Having issues with HamLib.  Previous version was fine. I use Kenwood TS2000 setting as Flexradio 6xxx has always been erratic.  This release now has additional options for Flex SmartSDR Slices.  That doesn't work either. whatever is selected testing CAT fails.  Anyone else using Flex successfully?

Bob,

I use the Flex settings just fine. On a 6600M.

I had been using the TS2000 option for many years, but with the later versions of Hamlib, I now use the Flex6.xxx and the 127.0.0.1:5003, or whatever TCP port has been identified for the slice to be used.

That works for me far more reliably than the TS2000. I also no longer have the few millisecond delay when transmitting and receiving switches over. What has been much more critical when using FT4 through the linear satellites.

Using Transverters of course.

Hi Peter,

It might be worth reinstalling and seeing how that goes. There's a program that runs as part of the install process that sets up Python and if that doesn't fully run, that could cause problems with RADE (thus it's important to let it run to completion and not close the console window that appears).

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

Great Job Mooneer!

Had no problem installing on my MacBook Pro (early 2015 running Monterey)

Also installed on an HP DV5 (core i3) laptop running Winblows 10 professional.  also no problem!

Definite improvement in audio quality!

Are you able to compare the audio/CAT control settings between the two versions? If so, can you tell me if there are any differences?

Thanks,

Mooner,
It seemed to me that the included version of HamLib was changed as the list of available rigs was different. The new version offers selection of Flexradio SSDR Slices. For me it crashed when I used the Kenwood TS2000 setting to control my Flex 6300, which I had been doing successfully for many years. I had not understood the need to use local host TCP settings to connect rather than COM ports when using the Flex6xxx option. Thanks to Walter for pointing me in the right direction, now working fine.

I continue to troubleshoot the mic permissions with this version. I have reinstalled with no change. No other app, including the previous version, has a mic permissions issue.

Bob just made a reference to local host TCP settings too. 127.0.0.1 is not “available” on my system due to security software that I use. If there is a use case for local host, please make this configurable to support specified addresses (and be IPv6 compatible.)

Hi Matt,

Do you have either of the following keys in Registry Editor?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\NonPackaged
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone

Per the current code, FreeDV requires both to be there in order to conclude that it does have microphone permissions. Those should correspond to the "desktop app" and general microphone permissions sliders, respectively. It's possible that this may not be a correct assumption for at least some systems, so it'd be good to figure that out for the next release.

Re: IP addresses--you should be able to enter any address in the respective box in the CAT configuration (at least for IPV4; I haven't tested with V6).

Thanks,

I do not have NonPackaged (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\NonPackaged)

I do have this and it has a value of Allow - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone

Thanks. FYI, this is what the CI build does to get that environment to allow microphone access:

Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone" -Name Value -Value Allow
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone" -Name Value -Value Allow
New-Item -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\" -Name "NonPackaged" -Force
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\NonPackaged" -Name Value -Value Allow
New-Item -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\" -Name "AppPrivacy" -Force
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AppPrivacy" -Name LetAppsAccessMicrophone -Value 0

Do you happen to have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AppPrivacy by chance? If so, what's LetAppsAccessMicrophone set to for you? What about the other keys above not already asked about?

Thanks. FYI, this is what the CI build does to get that environment to allow microphone access:

Good - Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone" -Name Value -Value Allow

Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone" -Name Value -Value Allow

Not present - New-Item -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\" -Name "NonPackaged" -Force

Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\NonPackaged" -Name Value -Value Allow

Not present - New-Item -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\" -Name "AppPrivacy" -Force
Not present - Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AppPrivacy" -Name LetAppsAccessMicrophone -Value 0

Not present - Do you happen to have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AppPrivacy by chance? If so, what's LetAppsAccessMicrophone set to for you? What about the other keys above not already asked about?

If you run the middle two commands in PowerShell, i.e.

New-Item -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\" -Name "NonPackaged" -Force
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone\NonPackaged" -Name Value -Value Allow

Does FreeDV otherwise start working for you? If so, we could just only enforce the existence of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone in future builds.

It's next weekend, Saturday February 8, 2025, LW6DSM Miguel Angel "Mike" Di Santo from Argentina will be sailing on a seagoing vessel named "Endurance" with a FreeDV RADE1 station on board. He will depart Buenos Aires at 07:00 local time and frequency 7045 on LSB 40 meters. If you have trouble hearing him there are local SDRs in Argentina that you can listen to.
