I am not adept at groups, so please forgive me if I am not addressing this in the correct manner.
I am successful in setting up and operating Free DV with my own station, having successfully made several contacts. My compadre just across town not so. He can hear me clearly. When he transmits, my waterfall goes black and I hear no audio. He uses his radio routinely for digital modes without issue, so it is no doubt a setup issue with Free DV, not hardware. When viewing the waterfall, when he goes to transmit he sees the voice peaks as expected.
FT-857 with Signalink. From my low level of understanding, Free DV is not converting his mic audio to digital, unlikely, or the software connection from Free DV to the audio output connection of the computer, outbound to the Signalink, is not correct. Any observations appreciated!

Mooneer,
As has been observed working with radio over the last sixty years, it sometimes seems all modes are FM. Lewis was able to effect some changes and he now is able to transmit a somewhat readable signal. Just across town I was just barely able to copy him, but signal strength only ran from -2 to -6 and the waterfall also showed a weak signal. His mic setting in Free DV is at full and the scope only shows peaks falling between +2 and -2. Settings in the computer are also at full. All that said, he has a different mic on the way, and with some luck a different mic, more output we hope, we are working on success. Thanks for the help, we will keep you informed.

You are speaking of a digital mode. Running the microphone gain in FreeDV way up will only lead to distortion and clipping. It will not increase signal strength. That would be adjusted with the output setting to the right and the rig's various compressor and ALC settings.

It is entirely possible that I misspoke with the term weak signal. I was referring to the visual representation in the receive waterfall when comparing it to stations that I have good copy on, and the dB value displayed below the Level bar graph. The peaks I refer to are those that show in the Frm Mic that the display switches to on transmit. At some point in the recent past as I was trying to learn the settings and attempt to interpret what was displayed, I was advised that the voice peaks, as displayed on that display, were normally expected to fall in the range of +/- .4 for good operation. I was also advised that the Mic Level in FreeDV is a relatively coarse control to set that value, and that adjustment of the mic in the computer sound settings was best for fine tuning. Again, I may be too old to learn, but sometimes I make enough tries that I benefit from my mistakes. Thanks!

Distance between stations is shown as 6.2 miles on QRZ and agrees with my own estimate. Oddly enough, a number of years ago we laughed about pointing our beams at each other, powering our amps and frying pigeons over the mall between us and not being able to hear each other. More recent experience we routinely can hear each other on our morning 7285 net. I don’t know what his TX Attenuation setting was but we will certainly take a look. Excuse my being dense, but I presume the OS volume setting you mention it the Mic Level slider on Free DV. BTW I just looked you up on QRZ and see you are in San Diego. It brought memories of waking up the first of four months of mornings wondering “What in the world have I done?”
