Howdy all,

In the Linux FreeDV  version running on my (KDE NEON) Mid 2012 MacBook Pro,  some time ago I tried to use USB0 (USB-Zero) with FreeDV setup and of course it didn't work for rig control with my IC705. (I actually did did invoke "ls /dev/" at the command line and located the actual correct port/device)

https://neon.kde.org/  (Ubuntu 24.04.x based,  K-Desktop environment)

But now, every time I start the modem, FreeDV reports that USB0 cannot be found and then starts working normally with the right port.

Is there a config file someplace that I can edit to remove the it's initial attempt to use USB0?

Hi Rick,

Per the README FreeDV stores configuration in ~/.freedv by default (~ meaning your home folder, for example /home/mooneer for me). You can try editing this file and removing/changing references to usb0. Let me know how this goes.

BTW I'd double check Tools->CAT and PTT Config and make sure you don't accidentally have usb0 enabled for something like PTT input. That might explain things if CAT control is working otherwise.

Thanks,

Mooneer!

Sometimes it's the most obvious things that are overlooked!!  I did indeed have it checked for PTT when I tried to get it to work with my ICOM Marine radio!!

Thanks for keeping me straight!

On another note,  I finally got FreeDV working with my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro running KDE Neon (Ubuntu inside)

The main problem with that one was an inability to get the built-in microphone to work.  It would record 2 sec of audio but during transmit it would mute for some reason.

I bought a cheap USB---> 3.5mm mic/headphone adapter and the Mac/Linux FreeDV easily found the new USB device.

So far now I have successfully gotten FreeDV to work on the following hardware & operating systems:

Win10 Pro, HP dv5 laptop (Intel Core -3, earlier versions of FreeDV)

Current FreeDV 2.1:

Win11 & Ubuntu 24.04.x  -->Acer  Core i7 laptop,
MacOS (Monterey) --> early 2015 Macbook Pro
Win10 Pro --> Bootcamp Early 2015 MacBook Pro
KDE Neon (Ubuntu Linux) running natively on  the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro (early Intel Core i7)

OpenSuSE Tunbleweed (Linux) running on an Asrock AM3/3+ motherboard,

with AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor

Thanks again Mooneer!

An Addendum

Just tried pairing a JBL Charge-3 Bluetooth speaker to the 2015 Macbook Pro running MacOS Monterey and even the microphone inside the JBL speaker works with FreeDV.

Then I thought FreeDV running on my other older Early 2012  MacBook Pro (with KDE NEON ) should also work with the JBL speaker and it does indeed, including the internal (inside the speaker) microphone!

For those using Ubuntu, Mint and other "Debian" based versions of Linux, KDE Neon uses Ubuntu 24.04.x as the base operating system and KDE Desktop Environment.
