I have an ICOM IC-7600 using the USB port for Rx/Tx, and Rx/Tx audio. It works fine with programs like MMSSTV, EasyPal, and FLDIGI. It doesn't wotk with FreeDV! The Rx audio works, but I can't place the rig into Tx! Is there anyone working on correctling this issue with the FreeDV program? I'm sure I'm not the only one with a IC-7600!

Thank You,

You didn't mention what settings you've tried. It looks like your radio supports PTT via CAT, but as far as I know, FreeDV only uses the com ports RTS or DTR signaling for PTT. Perhaps this will work better if/when hamlib is used instead of libctb.

I have tried everything I can think of.  The COM port I'm using on the PC is 9, but that is for the CAT system, not the RTS or DTR method.  The Rx/Tx audio and PTT is accomplished though the USB port on radio and PC... no sound card is needed.

Do you have a PTT button the mic?

Since there isn't PTT over CAT, on my 9100 that's what I use.

On systems (like ICOM) that don't use a simple RTS/DTR PTT switching option, the easiest option is to turn on Vox in the rig and tell FreeDV in its settings that you are using VOX to switch from RX to Tx.

I also use an IC-7600.  I cannot seem to get the VOX to work when I choose USB-D1 (so that I can get input from the IC-7600's sound card).  It's like VOX will not work with the D1 - D3 modes with the IC-7600.  At least I don't seem to know how to do it.  I adjust the VOX settings but the transciever will not key no matter what setting I try.  If I switch modes to plain USB VOX works fine, but then I cannot get audio from the sound card.

The other folks that responded to you were great to respond, but I don't think they understand the built-in sound card for digital modes without an external sound card adapter that the IC-7600 and IC-7200 have.  I just downloaded FreeDV version 0.96B and I don't see any good options except for VOX, but it is pretty clear to me that VOX will not work when the IC-7600 is in the D1 though D3 modes.  For now I have to hit the TRANSMIT button manually after clicking the PTT button in FreeDV.  It works, but it is just a little clumsy.  It would be nice if either VOX worked in the D1-3 modes or they have an option to key the radio using CI-V commands via USB.  Another option might be to use something like HRD and have the developer use HRD to key the transmitter.

I will continue to try different things, and if I stumble onto a good way to key the transmitter I will post back here.

Mr. Hayes,

With all due respect, you either did not read my response in it's entirety or you did not understand what it is that Mr. Trager and I are trying to accomplish.

Right now we can press PTT while transmitting.  What we are trying to accomplish is to use just the PTT button in the application to key the transmitter on a IC-7600.  Currently I am manually hitting the TRANSMIT switch on the front panel of my IC-7600 after pushing the PTT on the application to start the FreeDV transmission.  This process works just fine, it's just clunky, and it would be nice to click only the PTT in the application to start transmitting.

We have experimented with VOX setting but using the IC-7600's SSB data mode setting (USB-D1/2/3) the vox settings to not seem to have any effect.

I suspect that our options are thus:

1.  Manually just operate the transmitter after clicking PTT on the application (which I am currently doing now).
2.  Wait for the developer to support USB soundcard radios such as the IC-7600 and or IC-7200 using USB CI-V commands to key the transmitter.
3.  Build a separate interface to key the radio using software (COM PORT transmitter keyer).

Option #2 is what we are suggesting to the developer of FreeDV.  It is a suggestion merely, nothing more.  We are very happy with all that the developer has done to make FreeDV available for use and we are indeed thankful to them.

Thanks,

My apologies - I missed that.  Several people including myself have been asking for hamlib integration which would allow CAT operation.  I run an IC9100 and have the same operating conditions.

No problem Mr. Hayes.  I know you were trying to help.  A lot of the time people make posts here because they might not be able to get FreeDV to work at all, so you need to at least let them know what to try.

I think I am going to build a small COM keyer and try that out for now.  I have seen plans all over the web about how to build one.  I am more of an experimenter than anything and love trying new things.

I think FreeDV is really great and the folks here on the group are great to help newbies get their setup working.  Thanks for your input, without people like you commenting here in the groups there would be no answers, so I do appreciate it.

Or turn vox on on radio digitial signal input does fine job tripping VOX

Jerry,

I cannot seem to get VOX to work at all when using USB-D1 (USB data 1 mode).  I must use the digital data USB-D1 mode so that I can get sound from the PC to the Transceiver via USB.

Are you using the USB-D1 mode with your IC-7600?  If so what are the settings I need to adjust for VOX?  I have tried chaging the various VOX settings, but they will not key the transceiver in USB-D1/2/3.

Just to make it clear, I am using the USB connection on the IC-7600 for sound and CI-V command access.  When I use FreeDV I set the IC-7600 to USB-D1 so that I can get sound from the Transceiver to the PC and vise-versa.  I am NOT using an external sound card interface.

If you are using the same setup, and can elaborate on the settings to get VOX working that would be great.

Thanks,

MMSSTV, FLDigi, and EasyPal work fine with my IC-7600, perhaps a better option would be to use the same method that they use.  Perhaps the programmers of those  programs mentioned can give some advice.

have you checked using ham lib for ptt? works 100% on my ic-7100:

OK, I just had sometime to read some emails from long ago, and MEL sent me one that did the trick!  He saw a post that said to change the BAUD RATE in 7600 menu to AUTO (I had it set for 9800), and that did the trick!  Thanks again Mel, if you happen to read this post!
