Hi all,

I think I mentioned this before but I think it would be a good idea to have a weekly FreeDV net for North American users (similar to what's already done in Europe, Argentina/South America and now Australia). Any interest from people for such a thing? Also, if so:

(a) Any willingness to be Net Control (i.e. on a rotation with others), and
(b) What day of the week/where should it be held?

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

I am willing to try being a Net Control for a partial coverage net for North American on 40 meters. A good start time for me is 9 or 10 PM ET on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday nights. I have a short end fed antenna for 40 meters.  My location is near Detroit Michigan.

I've only heard FreeDV stations on 20m ... perhaps because that's where I keep it tuned ...  ;-)  That said, I can try to assist a Net Control as a relay station - listening from SE-GA. (Note: I'm wondering, due to 'capture effect', if an Assistant Net Control might listen on one frequency for stations wanting to join the Net - then forward that list to the Main Net Control, while the Net continues on the main frequency? (Otherwise, it would seem that closer and/or stronger, stations would always come first. Also, it would reduce the time spent waiting for the Main Net Control to gather his/her own list.)
Just a thought ... and, yes, I can think of arguments against that idea as well ...  :-)  KD4E

Hi David,

FreeDV Reporter might come in handy here. For instance, the UK folks who do their net put numbers in their user messages corresponding to the order in which people are talking in the net (for example, G4MKT could have "1" indicating that he's the first person to talk while others have 2, 3, etc. I'm not sure how well this would work for a net with possibly more participants, though, so any ideas would be good.

Thanks,

NetLogger would help manage this easily, from what I have seen with several other nets using it today.

Hello everyone, how are you doing? Well, we use the following system in Argentina: a head station, that is, a station that assigns the floor to whoever is going to speak in a sense, let's say organized, that is, that head gives the floor to each person so that they then give the floor back to the head. So there are no problems in that aspect with the organization when we are more than 10 or 12 stations that sometimes get together here.

All,
I would be interested in participating in a FreeDV net. I am located near Annapolis, MD, and can run 300W into a 40m 1/4 wave vertical with 64 radials or a dipole at 40 feet. 9PM to 10 PM in the evening EST would be best for me.
If anyone wants to try working me on 40 meters (or any other band), feel free to send me an email and set up a schedule. I am retired.

I make a similar offer.  I have a list of 7 hams that work 40 DV in the South East.  I have communicated 3 of the them including N3FL on 40.

I am located in Auburn, AL

Mooneer and all,

I currently do net control for Sunday Flex Net , I would be glad to help / host another net .   The biggest issue we will have is to find a clear frequency.   When asked most would move for a weekly occurring net of users .  Also I can record and post live podcast through YouTube , any way I can help.    My YouTube channel is my call WA5QPZ.   Maybe we can start a new YT channel, FreeDV or Digital Voice channel, any way I can help..

Hey Dayne, War Eagle!
I graduated from Auburn, 20 years ago, and I'm now outside of Charleston, SC. I'm interested in trying 40M DV, but I need to do some troubleshooting as I suspect RF feeding back in the shack causing my FT-857D to get stuck in transmit when I key up on 40, but not on higher bands. What kind of power and antennas are you and the other South East DV folks using? I'll be able to try 50 watts on my end-fed if my problem ends up being a bad 1:1 unun choke, else I'll be trying 10 watts into a QRP loop tuner.

I was going to get on-the-air tonight at 10PM but there is too much lightning. Maybe tomorrow night at 10PM on 7.177?

I deployed another end-fed long wire and it's not giving me issues. I tried calling cq for a while, but didn't hear anything. I'll try again over the weekend.

At least on 20 meters, the band was pretty dead today (but did pick up as the day went on). I suspect this weekend will be pretty good assuming the sun doesn't send any surprises :)

Fred,

I was on 40 meters last night at 10:00 Eastern.  Called you with no reply and then David, N6NY,  in Detroit replied and we had a difficult QSO for about 30 minutes.

Finding a good frequency for both of us was a challenge. I used 7.282 but he had antenna matching problems and we had to QSY down to 7.177.  I think he was running only 30 watts and overdriving his audio. I was running 450 peak.  His audio was better after backing off his microphone.  He was running -2 SNR and down most of the time.

Let's try this again.  Just let me know.  Feel free to text me at 478-719-4964.

Fred,

I will try to get on 7177 KHz tonight , July 17th, at 10 pm ..   20 has been pretty open too after 10 pm Eastern time .    We can see if we can make a consistent connection between you and Central Texas that time on 40 meters .

I'm seeing stuff in the waterfall at 7182 but too weak to decode from here, unfortunately (though it's still daylight in California).
