There is indeed a radio that has (or can have) this feature today.

 

With the addition of the EzDV device from TAPR.org, it will wirelessly link to your Flex 6000 or 8000 series radio, and quickly offer you 2 NEW modes, as FDVU and FDVL for FreeDV use. ezDV – TAPR

 

This works quite well, and very simple to implement and use, plus allow you to use your existing local microphone, or Ipad or IOS cellphone as well. Without the need of a PC at all.

 

 

Unfortunately, while this works great for the previous FreeDV modes like 1600, 700D, 700E etc..  It cannot handle the additional resource demand for the new RADE mode.

 

So, anything is possible. 😊

The Flexradio units have an internal Linux computer which is perfectly capable of hosting softmodems, and has done so in the past.

It's more of a matter of Flexradio not being able to track our development and not taking the trouble to create a sandbox for user applications, as such a thing has development and support costs, especially if it is to support the GUI.

Users of that brand might lobby the company to create a sandbox they can live with, and which can be turned off easily to isolate it in support issues. After all, the number of modulations and softmodems used on HF is not decreasing and this is not the only application you might wish to host in the radio.

I'd also like to add that Quisk (SDR application; https://james.ahlstrom.name/quisk/) has FreeDV support built-in, no extra hardware required. Useful if you have a supported radio such as the Hermes Lite.
