A record rollup this morning although NVIS (local) propagation was poor. The best signals for me were from Sydney - Melbourne but South Australia was good too. Again we had some new stations and there was mention of the article in the latest Amateur Radio magazine and a new video from Peter VK3YE.

Stations on frequency, not all transmitting, included VK2AWJ (John first time on the net), VK2BLQ, VK2DWG, VK2JAB, VK2KNC, VK2SPB, VK2SPD, VK2VCO, VK3CKY, VK3CRY, VK3FFB, VK3GTP, VK3KEZ, VK3SRC, VK3PWG, VK3VB, VK3VKL, VK3YE, VK4XYZ, VK5COL, VK5KFG, VK5KVA, VK5UR, VK6KR and me VK3TPM.

@Peter, it seemed a difficult morning. Today was my second try from my Sydney location.
Last week with a JPC7 I got nothing.
Full quarter wave vertical I put up yesterday, and I caught a few snippets. Thought you mentioned my callsign early on, tho not clear.
Heard a few snippets from some of the others too.
Best was when you were closing down the net. lol.

Hi all,
I've added RADEv1 to my websdr at Nepean Men's Shed (South Penrith, NSW).
Note the new URL:

Our www.nepeanshed.org.au website will be hosted elsewhere to look prettier, soon.

I'm using the code developed for the KA9Q websdr software.
Download the latest FreeDV "tar.gz" file, apply Mooneer's patch, and compile.
The "git clone" doesn't get the exact same code.

Questions:

1. Do you have a location with the code changes on the OpenWebRX side in case anyone else wants to update theirs? Or did it not require code changes there?

2. Does the "FreeDV" mode button automatically use LSB below 10 MHz?

Hi Mooneer,
1) put freedv-ka9q in /usr/local/bin/.
And librade.so.0.1 in /usr/local/lib and run ldconfig.
OpenwebRX mods:
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/owrx/module/freedv.py
replace "freedv_rx" with "freedv_rade"
Create an executable shell script /usr/bin/freedv_rade
#!/bin/bash
echo $* $0 >> /tmp/free1
. /data/home/alanb/src/freedv-gui/rade-venv/bin/activate
PYTHONPATH=/data/home/alanb/src/freedv-gui/build_linux/rade_src freedv-ka9q -i 8000 -o 8000  2>/tmp/free2

2) No, the FreeDV mode always selects USB. Before the upgrade of OWRX by John VK1JT, yes, I had an
upper and lower FreeDV modes called FreeDVu and FreeDVl. This is an OWRX oversight.

It was a quick hack and yes, for 40m, wrong sideband. Do we have any ham rigs that cannot do digital modes on USB on 40m?

Also note, this WebSDR uses an original SDRplay RSP1 and, being nolonger supported by SDRplay, I've "hacked" the libmirisdr4
library and miri_sdr to allow frequency changes and thus provide lots of bands, hf through to UHF and beyond.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for that info. There are definitely older rigs that can't do USB on 40 meters, though I don't think they're ones people would necessarily use for any digital modes (AFAIK). Even if not, it's still a good idea to follow the current convention as much as possible, so something to add longer-term.

Thanks,

Hi all,
I've "hacked OpenWebRX here, now does USB and LSB, URL:

Trivia!

Older rigs that do not have USB on 160/80/40 etc....(or do not have selectable sideband)
( there are even some older marine HF radios that are convertable to 160 that cannot operate on other than  USB.)

Swan 240
Swan single banders
Heathkit single-banders HW-12/22/32  (12A/22A/32A does have selectable sideband)
And a few others.

By the way, My 1960's  Hallicrafters HT32B, HT44 and SR400 transmitters and Transceiver have selectable sideband.
I probably wouldn't attempt to use them on any digital mode including FreeDV. (maybe RTTY!)

etc etc.

Not really sure if ANY modern HF SSB radios exist that do not have selectable sideband and I am fairly sure that there are no HF transceivers that one would use for FreeDV or any other digital mode that don't selectable sideband.

The ENTIRE  HF "World"  (Commercial, Military, Land Mobile, Aviation HF, Marine HF)    standardized LONG ago with Upper Side Band for voice communications.  Most marine radios and "almost" all commercial aircraft HF Radios do not have LSB as a selectable choice.  (they're certainly capable of operating using LSB....., they intentionally prevent the user from selecting LSB)

ONLY "Amateurs"  and CB'ers  use Lower Sideband.  (I always LOVE being compared to CB'ers)

There is no longer an operational reason to use LSB at all and there hasn't been for maybe 30 years!  I was flying a military airplane in 1981 all over the world using a Collins 618-T2 that ONLY had USB.  I operated 75 and 40m all the time! (the Collins 618-T series actually has LSB/USB with LSB NOT user selectable)

So there's no reason to use LSB on 160/80/40 when operating a modern mode like FreeDV.  In fact, for any communications,  Digital or analog SSB,  there's every reason to standardize using USB universally!

Again, I digress!
