Hi all,

This is a reminder that this month's FreeDV Activity Day is this coming weekend. (As a reminder, Activity Day takes place on the third weekend of every month.) This event will bring together people interested in HF digital voice on the air for conversation and fun. Contacts using the official application as well as the SM1000 handheld microphone and other supporting devices and applications are welcome.

Event time: 12AM Pacific time (0700Z) on March 16 to 11:59PM on March 17 (0659Z on March 18) (48 hours).

Suggested frequencies:
160 meters: 1.997 MHz
80 meters: 3.625, 3.643, 3.693, 3.697 MHz or 3.850 MHz
60 meters (in countries where allowed): 5.4035 MHz or 5.3665 MHz
40 meters: 7.177 MHz or 7.197 MHz
20 meters: 14.236 MHz or 14.240 MHz
17 meters: 18.118 MHz
15 meters: 21.313 MHz
12 meters: 24.933 MHz
10 meters: 28.330 or 28.720 MHz
10 GHz (for those in range of QO-100): 10489.640 MHz

(Note that LSB/DIGL is used below 10MHz as per current convention for voice modes, USB/DIGU otherwise. 60 meters is of course USB/DIGU only.)

As this isn't a contest, there's no pressure to make contacts or send logs, but you can always confirm QSOs via the usual means if you'd like (LoTW, eQSL, QRZ, etc.) Enabling reporting (PSK Reporter and FreeDV Reporter) in the FreeDV application and joining FreeDV Reporter and Discord are recommended, however, so others can see that you're on the air and hearing them (for instance, here's the current map of listeners). :D

Feel free to spread this far and wide among your local ham friends and groups! :) Let me know if you have any questions about the event and definitely post here if you have issues getting the application working prior to the event.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

I bought a used SM1000. I’ve been testing it and it seems it will not decode 700 D or 700E.  It will decode 1600.  I’ve been using those way files.  Can I upgrade the unit.  Is there a downloaded file that I can load in the USB port.  And or another file to bring the software level up to current.  Do these files need to be flashed to the unit or just downloaded to the unit.  I’m open to any suggestions and appreciate any help I can get.

Don,

Yes, you can indeed update the firmware to the latest version, to support the multiple modes, 1600, 700d, and 700e. And of course analog.

codec2/stm32/doc/sm1000_manual.md at main · drowe67/codec2 (github.com)  is the link to the latest V5 version.

Let us know if you get stuck anywhere or need assistance flashing the unit.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

It is indeed a USB-mini. Not a micro.

This link will pull down the BIN file for the V5.

http://www.rowetel.com/downloads/codec2/smartmic/sm1000v5.bin

Here’s the notes from the installation docs.

Windows

Find and install the STM32CubeProgrammer software by searching on the ST web site.

  1. Connect the SM1000 USB to a Windows PC.
  2. Apply power with PTT held down, then release PTT.
  3. Run the STM32CubeProgrammer application and select the down arrow on the left side, and navigate to the "Erasing & Programming" section.
  4. Select the Verify programming option.
  5. In the "File path" on the left-hand side, select Open file and navigate to the .bin file you'd like to flash.
  6. Select "USB" from the drop-down list on the upper right and push the Refresh button next to the Port drop-down in the "USB configuration" area. The SM1000 will appear as "USB1" or similar in the list; select that entry.
  7. Click on the Connect button.
  8. Ensure that "PID" displays as DF11 and "VID" as 0483.
  9. Select Start Programming and the firmware procedure will commence.
  10. A message in the log at the bottom of the window will display once complete.

Power cycle the SM1000 and the new firmware will run.

Linux

  1. Apply power with PTT held down, then release PTT.
  2. Connect the SM1000 to a Ubuntu Linux PC and type “dmesg”. You should see a STM32F4 boot device.
  3. To flash the SM1000

4.  $ sudo apt-get install dfu-util

5.  $ sudo dfu-util -d 0483:df11 -c 1 -i 0 -a 0 -s 0x08000000 -D sm1000v5.bin

After about 10 seconds you will be returned to the command line.

  1. Power cycle the SM1000 and the new firmware will run.

Tips

  1. A sound blaster record input connected to RIG MIC CN7 is a good way to test if the SM1000 is transmitting a signal. You can receive your FreeDV signal on the bench using FreeDV GUI on your PC. No radio is required for this test.
  2. Small external speakers and an external mic tend to make FreeDV sound better. A low cost analog headset works well.
  3. You may notice background noise from the SM1000 with no signal connected, especially at high volume levels. This becomes inaudible when the SM1000 is connected to a SSB radio in either analog or digital mode.
  4. The squelch threshold is fixed at 2dB for FreeDV 1600 and is off for 700D to optimise low SNR reception. However 700D will squelch if the Forward Error Correction (FEC) fails to decode.

When you click on the link Don, it will start the download process directly.

If you look in your downloads folder, you should see the BIN file there.

Please let me know if that’s not the case.

And if it would be any easier for you, you can join my zoom channel, and we can go into a breakout room for some isolation, and then walk through the whole process that way.

Just let me know any way I can help you the best.

Take care,

Walter/K5WH
