Hi all,

FreeDV Reporter is having problems at the moment due to the high usage by the FreeDV community (a good problem!) I'm currently looking into this and will let you know if I have any updates.

Hi all,

It looks like FreeDV Reporter is back for the time being. We'll see if what I did helps or if we'll be back here in a couple of days.

Technical info: The FreeDV Reporter server is written in Python and uses python-socketio and aiohttp to implement a Socket.IO server. Before today, the VM it was running on was using Debian bookworm and Python 3.11. When I logged in to look at the VM today, the Python process running FreeDV Reporter was using 100% CPU. I decided to upgrade the VM to trixie and Python to 3.13 (as there are major performance improvements between 3.11 and now). Currently Python is using ~30% CPU but again, this could be because there are now fewer users connected to FreeDV Reporter. 

BTW the server's source code is at https://bitbucket.org/tmiw/freedv-reporter/src/master/ if anyone's curious.

As mentioned before, in these times of high activity (and seeing now the overload of the system), 

it makes even more sense to set a timeout for stations where no operators are present at the radio, as it is the case with almost all WebSDRs?

How could people be made aware of this ? 

And an other problem (mentioned before) due to higher activities (sure it's great to see) these days:

How can people be made aware that they should leave the calling frequency once contact has been established?
In particular, on 20m DX, it is impossible to start a call while QSOs are still in progress.

Does anyone know about this? 

Is there anywhere (outside this community) where this can be pointed out?

That’s a nice call out Stefan. Other modes have a qsy up or down option that can either click in defined steps or even choose a given number of steps. This of course presents a bit more of a challenge sine this is voice and we need to be more cognizant of existing qsos.

It would certainly help server load if stations timed out from reporting
when AFK.
If this was the default behaviour of FreeDV-GUI with a warning about the
reasons behind it next to the configuration option setting it would
maybe deter users from disabling it.

This could be used in conjunction with Mooneer's excellent 'idle' filter
idea.

I really don't see the 'frequency suggestions' as calling frequencies!
If a band is open I simply find a clear frequency, track the reporter on
frequency, put CQ in the Msg and use the Voice Keyer to transmit
pre-recorded CQ calls.
Within a few minutes I see stations checking out 'my' frequency and
after a while when it's apparent that conditions are not suitable they
move on. Or we have a QSO :)
Alternatively I look for stations in the reporter calling on
'non-standard' frequencies and listen to see if I can hear them.
I don't have the luxury of a wide band pan adapter.

14.236 and 14.240 are rarely free of SSB QRM in Europe, generally QRO
stations over here and/or POTA etc. in the USA, so I rarely listen
there. Also the reporter is generally too cluttered.

We'll definitely discuss the options already presented and figure out next steps. 

FWIW, I'm watching "top" on the server hosting FreeDV Reporter and Python occasionally get back up into the 90s percent when there are a lot of stations reporting receiving someone transmitting. Unfortunately many of the current set of people reporting RX right now have transmitted within the last hour or so so I'm not sure how much it'll help to kick off people who have been idle too long (and we may not necessarily want to do that for people who are explicitly RX-only, either). I can see the value in additional filtering options, though.

Thinking ahead, maybe user configurable filters (with stored settings),
with a quick access ON/OFF check box in the GUI.

It could have context menu access to select any configured filter by
name or create a new filter by selecting reporter fields and setting
appropriate conditions/values for each in a GUI.

Example: check the box for Miles/km and set '<1000', also check the box
for Status and set '!="RX Only"'

Useful for excluding DX reporters on the same frequency when operating
NVIS in small regional groups and also 'RX Only' stations. (Unlikely
combination but gives the idea)

Total flexibility would ultimately avoid requests for more separate
filters going forward.

Parameters could be selected from pick lists in some cases e.g. Status,
Time since last TX. (maybe options like less than 10mins 30mins 1hr 6hr)

Just daydreaming as I appreciate the work involved ;)
