Has someone created a  set of instructions audio configuration of FreeDV on Mac OS with SmartSDR and a FlexRadio 6000 series radio?

I have VB-Cable available for virtual cable.  Hamlib works fine for PTT and frequency control.

I am just having trouble setting up audio. Can someone who has set up FreeDV with a Mac and a Flex 6000 series radio (mine is a 6400M) please guide me through the audio set up?
Do I need to select any DAX options? Please assist....

By the way, have FreeDV set up and running fine with Windows Smart SDR, a usb headset, and my FlexRadio 6400M

Hi Peter,

I have a 6300 and use a Mac. In SmartSDR, go to Radio->DAX Streaming and choose your virtual audio cables accordingly. For example, I use VB-Cable A/B:

This corresponds to the following settings in Tools->Audio Config in FreeDV:

For CAT control, go to Radio->CAT Control and use TS-2000 and port 5001 as shown in the below example:

(Also change your slice if not using A.) With the above settings, you'd use the following in FreeDV's Tools->CAT and PTT Config:

Hope this helps!

Mooneer,
Thank you very much for the instructions/guide. I followed them and everything works except for one thing. When I transmit I hear the digital audio that I am transmitting through the iMac’s speaker. What control have I not yet configured correctly? FreeDV signals are decoded and converted into voice out of the speaker. The 6400M transmits and the waveform of the signal displays correctly as it is supposed to. I simply can’t figure out how to mute the speaker when I am transmitting. Am I missing  something simple?

Hi Peter,

Do you happen to have MON turned on in SmartSDR? If so, try turning that off and seeing if that helps.

Thanks,

Mooneer,
I checked MON… It is not on. I now know more about what the problem is but I have now idea how to correct it. I believe that I have followed your instructions exactly but the problem seems to be that the output of the FreeDV program which is supposed to be going out of the Mac and  Smart SDR seems not to be getting to the Flex6400M radio. CAT keys the radio on controls the frequency but with no data to modulate the radio no power is transmitted. Apps which are built into SmartSDR make the radio transmit RF power but not external applications. It feels like I must be missing a setting which is required to modulate that radio. Currently, what I would have expected to send to the radio is simply coming out of the iMac/s speaker. The data from  the radio to the FreeDV program is working fine. I can receive and decode FreeDV transmissions.

I suspect that the solution is something simple but I don’t know where to look next.

Thanks,

Hi Peter,

Are both DAX buttons turned on in SmartSDR? For example, on mine:

Additionally, for the bottom DAX button, the channel number should match the one configured in Radio->DAX Streaming (though this would cause RX to not work properly if this wasn't configured correctly):

Hi Peter,

which Firmware are you running on the Flex?
Heard of this problem (sometimes intermittently) in case of a bug in the 3.10. by two other OM's.

Stefan,
My radio says: HW Version: v3.10.10.38187. Is that the number that you are referring to? If this is my problem what is the solution?

Hi Peter,

yes exactly.
The guys here did a downgrade to the previous version (below 3.10.*), which helped obviously. But i can’t guarantee. It’s just a thought.

My Flex 6400M runs with a super old 3.2.9, FreeDV, for Mac of course, and SmartSdr from Marcus,  without any problems.
In the Windows environment there are some issues in the latest 2.0.2.
So that would be my next recommendation. Try the 2.0.1. for mac, if the firmware downgrade isn’t helpful.

Good luck.
