Hi all,

This is a reminder that this month's FreeDV Activity Day is this coming weekend. (As a reminder, Activity Day takes place on the third weekend of every month.) This event will bring together people interested in HF digital voice on the air for conversation and fun. Contacts using the official application as well as ezDV, the SM1000 handheld microphone and other supporting devices and applications are welcome.

Event time: 12AM Pacific time (0800Z) on November 16 to 11:59PM on November 17 (0759Z on October 21) (48 hours).

Suggested frequencies:
160 meters: 1.997 MHz
80 meters: 3.625, 3.643, 3.693, 3.697 MHz or 3.850 MHz
60 meters (in countries where allowed): 5.4035 MHz or 5.3665 MHz
40 meters: 7.177 MHz or 7.197 MHz
20 meters: 14.236 MHz or 14.240 MHz
17 meters: 18.118 MHz
15 meters: 21.313 MHz
12 meters: 24.933 MHz
10 meters: 28.330 or 28.720 MHz
10 GHz (for those in range of QO-100): 10489.640 MHz

(Note that LSB/DIGL is used below 10MHz as per current convention for voice modes, USB/DIGU otherwise. 60 meters is of course USB/DIGU only.)

As this isn't a contest, there's no pressure to make contacts or send logs, but you can always confirm QSOs via the usual means if you'd like (LoTW, eQSL, QRZ, etc.) Enabling reporting (PSK Reporter and FreeDV Reporter) in the FreeDV application and joining FreeDV Reporter and Discord are recommended, however, so others can see that you're on the air and hearing them (for instance, here's the current map of listeners). :D

Feel free to spread this far and wide among your local ham friends and groups! :) Let me know if you have any questions about the event and definitely post here if you have issues getting the application working prior to the event.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

Oops, I'm not currently at my computer so I definitely didn't hear this. There did seem to be a fair amount of activity earlier today, though.

This is K8CHY.  I am the person that could not hear RADE transmissions but could transmit aok when the RADE beta version came available a few weeks ago.
The 700D option works great with this version but RADE does not.  I uninstalled the RADE version and reloaded it today.  I have the same problem.

I watched the window on my Windows 10 laptop as the files loaded.  Eventually it began a new line that read:

Installing collected packages:   various files were named then came ...  torch, matplotlib, torch audio .... and it stopped for several minutes.  Then it finished after a rather long time.

Hoping this helps as you fix the bugs ...

Dani, the problem is not the program but the version of Windows you are using. Some work and others don't. It is not a problem with the radio. They will surely fix it to make it more universal, but the problem is in the version of Windows. I am sending you a couple of audios and videos so you can see it.

Jose,

For the record the OS Name is Microsoft Windows 10 Home
Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045
If there is a way to change the version or build it would be good to know.
Receive audio does not work; torch audio appears to not load

Thanks Jose.  Looking forward to the next version of freeDV

To find the problem you should go to a previous version and see if it plays in 2020 mode,
if not the rand won't play either.
Also doesn't play on core 2 processors.

Hi Daine Well I use another version which is the Enterprise version, it is an economical version and it also works perfectly well, so it may be a very heavy version for your computer. Try with another computer or with another version of Windows, it may be the solution, if anything, I am at your disposal. Thank you very much.

I totally agree with you Bavis,  if 2020 doesn't work it's because you don't have the AVX connected to the computer
today I heard them perfectly through the Sparta sdr on 40 meters but I was having a complication here with my RIG and I couldn't greet them when are we going to do a crossover but we need to speak each one in their language I in Spanish you in Greek do you remember when we made the contacts how well we did a hug Babys  73   RADE WORKS SPECTACULAR !!!

Hi Dayne,

Try saving the attached file to your hard drive and play it by going to Tools->Start Play File - From Radio (while in RADE mode). Do you hear anything when you do so?

Thanks,

Mooneer,

It worked, but with problems.  I heard someone talking (you?) but the audio was pulsing in and out (signal then noise then signal ....) directly such that I could not understand anything being said.
I could see on the waterfall the width of a signal.  I tried listening to the file in 700D mode with the new and the old version.  For both cases I could see the bandwidth of a signal on the waterfall but heard only noise.   I tried playing the wav file and I heard only noise.

I tried loading the new RADE version on an older laptop with the Home OS version that I have for WSJT-X in case my primary laptop fails.
It worked in the 700D mode but when I switched to RADE the program totally exited. It would load again and work in 700D mode but exits every time I start RADE.

Hope this helps.

Dayne

Hi Dayne,

It sounds like the systems you may have been trying RADE on may not be up to snuff. What are the specs (CPU, RAM, etc.) of the machines you've tried it with? It's possible you may not be able to use RADE at least until more optimization is done (see https://freedv.org/radio-autoencoder/).

Thanks,

Mooneer,

The laptop I use for WSJT-X, logging, etc. has the following:

CPU Intel Celeron N2840 @ 2.16 GHz
RAM 4.00 GB
SYS 64 bit OS, x 64 bit basic processor
HDD 500 GB

It is a little slow compared to a later model I have.  I have been thinking about getting a newer machine.
QUESTION:  When comparing machines I find I can trade-off RAM and speed of processor.
For ham applications where timing is important, what should I go for processor speed or more RAM?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Dayne,

I suspect anything built in the last couple of years should be more than sufficient for most ham radio apps in terms of CPU. I'd try to max out the RAM and storage if anything, especially if this is a laptop where those are increasingly being soldered in.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ
