The Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics at Hamburg University of
Technology is interested in hydrologic processes, environmental and
climate related challenges. We focus on creating new knowledge through
research and innovation, developing new measurement tools and predictive
capabilities to provide accurate understanding of multiscale processes
occurring near Earth’s surface. For this, we combine theory,
state-of-the-art modelling and experiments using cutting-edge tools such
as high-resolution imaging, satellite remote sensing, artificial
intelligence, big data processing, and computational fluid dynamics.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of
geoinformatics and geo-computation to utilize state-of-the-art Machine
Learning Algorithms and modelling combined with various programming
tools (e.g. Python or R) for processing large datasets related to soil
and climatic parameters. The aim is to develop innovative solutions for
global scale predictive mapping of state and change of soil parameters
and functions under different climate change scenarios with a particular
focus on continental Europe. Concepts and processes such as soil
degradation, soil salinization, and soil health will be central to this
project. The successful candidate will be primarily involved in the
funded Horizon Europe project on AI4SoilHealth
(https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101086179). The candidate will
spend a significant amount of time in collecting and processing large
geospatial data obtained from different sources such as NASA Landsat,
Modis, Copernicus or the legacy data and developing AI-based solutions
to predict spatial and temporal variations of parameters influencing
soil health. Several European universities and organizations are
involved in AI4SoilHealth so the successful candidate should be
interested in interdisciplinary collaboration and networking with
scientists and groups within Europe and beyond.

YOUR TASKS:
- Conducting independent research as outlined above
- Publishing in peer-reviewed journals and attending scientific meetings
- Helping with supervision of MSc students if deemed necessary by the
Head of the Institute

YOUR PROFILE:
- Completed scientific university studies (M.Sc. or Dipl.) and a PhD
degree in environmental science or engineering, hydrology or related
disciplines
- Excellent communication skills in English (oral / written)
- Outstanding academic results and recognitions
- Independent in programming with python, R or similar platforms
- Experiences with working with global datasets such as MODIS, Sentinel
or similar as well as background in GIS and satellite remote sensing
- Strong interests, motivation and commitment to research and development
- Interest in international exchanges, teamwork and collaboration

OUR OFFER:
- A full-time postdoctoral position for 3 years in a very international,
stimulating, multidisciplinary and dynamic institute
- Access to state-of-the-art experimental and numerical tools and platforms
- Possibility to collaborate with internationally recognized scientists
- High level of personal responsibility and freedom in your work
