ISRIC spring school on digital soil mapping, classification and assessment

From 28 May to 1 June 2018, ISRIC - World Soil Information will organise a Spring School on digital soil mapping, classification and assessment for soil and environmental scientists, students, soil experts and professionals in natural resources management. The spring school will take place at the Wageningen Campus in the Netherlands and will consist of two five-day courses that are run in parallel.

 

1. Hands-on Digital Soil Mapping (DSM)

This course introduces methods and software for management, analysis and mapping of soil variables within the R environment for statistical computing. The course alternates between lectures and computer exercises and covers a variety of subjects, such as geostatistics, linear regression and machine learning for soil mapping, quantification of uncertainty and soil map validation. The course aims at soil geographers and environmental scientists who want to learn more about the theory and practice of digital soil mapping. After this course participants will be able to apply the methods learnt to their own datasets.

 

2. World Soils and their Assessment (WSA)

This is a course on the soils of the world and their assessment. It will provide an introduction to the soils of the world and their diversity, their main forming factors, classification (according to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources 2014, update 2015), and management. The course will include lectures and hands-on exercises. It will make use of the facilities of the World Soil Museum. The programme includes a field excursion in the area around Wageningen, which has a rich diversity of landscapes and soils. Furthermore, the programme includes lectures and hands-on exercises on soil functions and regional planning as well as soil management strategies for soil conservation and optimization of soil functions.
