Morning all

Not sure if anyone has seen this but Nesta is funding some hyperlocal media projects. More here and see excerpt below.

My background is publishing and digital media and I'm interested in how local media can be reinvented which is why this caught my eye (haven't given up on my Bath Rewired project yet!).

Does anyone know of anyone who might be interested in this? I'm presuming with two unis (one with tech expertise and one with media expertise), a vibrant tech scene and a relatively small population, this is something that is worth exploring.

If you are interested, let me know. I'm due to be talking to someone at Bath Spa Uni this week.

Martin

Scope of the projects

Hyperlocal media information and content services are at the heart of this competition. Successful applicants will address opportunities in developing technology that demonstrates the potential for hyperlocal media and technology services across the UK.

We are interested in applications that support our continued investigation into and stimulation of hyperlocal media and technology. In order to gain a balanced mix of projects with a broad coverage of relevant businesses, we may take a portfolio approach to project funding.

Successful projects will lead to, or focus on, one or more of the following:
  • connected devices that enable geographical technologies to deliver content across devices, platforms and environments
  • mobile access technologies that support hyperlocal urban media services and provide alternatives to local digital television
  • services that deliver valuable hyperlocal services to rural areas, especially where internet access or digital television provision is weak
  • geographically-based application programming interfaces that can feed third-party services
  • platforms that lower the transaction costs of personalised and consumption-based advertising, or that develop geo-targeted, cross-device tracking and reporting technologies
  • interactive platforms that aggregate content and information services, and can track audience demand and engagement.

As part of this programme, projects will be required to participate in research activity led by Nesta. Commercially confidential information will remain so, but project partners will be expected to provide updates on their work as they go through the design, build and testing phases.

Hi Martin

I can suggest contacts at Uni of Bath and Bath if you want.

Also: you could Mydex-enable the app ie have the selection of hyper-local data driven by circumstances and preferences held in the reader's personal data store (PDS). Intersection of open data with user-driven "volunteered personal information" will prove iinovative and powerful, and hyperlocal media is an excellent application for it. The PDS fields (held by the individual, shared va secure API under terms of a clear trust framework) could include postcode/address, viewing/browsing history, interests, user-generated content.

If you add a really well-designed and convenient "click to offer financial support" then you've pretty much reinvented the local media business model from the bottom up.

Mydex CIC is happy to provide the info and links you need to get the right words in the bid. We know the director at Nesta is looking for ways to support PDS-based innovation.

Hello,

I was at a meeting with BANES yesterday to discuss the idea of them opening some of their data and putting on a hack day next year. One of the things we talked about was the possibility of building hyperlocal services for residents so there's certainly potential for a connection to a project worthy of the Nesta funding.

I'd be more than happy to have a chat and get involved in making something happen :)

Cheers
  Simon

Simon

Many thanks for this. William has also offered help/ideas. Can I suggest we meet to explore this further? I'll email separately.

I wouldn't mind knowing more about a BANES hack too? We put this together a couple of years ago and it's still heavily used by local parents.

Sadly since then it's been hard finding kindred spirits who are prepared to put their unpaid time where mouth is, so I'm very very happy to get involved if you get some traction.

Feel free to email me.

Richard
