Just uploaded to the documents section of the Group is a report based
on an initial survey of research in to internet usage in Butetown
carried out by Anthony Brito of Community Helps Itself and myself.

This research was carried out to feed in to tomorrow's event in
Cardiff.

Headlines:

• Internet Home Access. 92% can access to the Internet/Web at home.
• Length of Use at Home. 46% use the web on average for up to 1 hour a
day
from home.
• Community Access. 46% use local community access points (e.g.,
Internet
Caféʼs, Libraries).
• Mobile Phone Use. Are heavy users of mobile technologies, especially
for text
messaging (SMS).
• Social Network Use. Use MSN, Bebo, Facebook and MySpace (amongst
others
services) to socially connect and chat with friends.
• Number of Friends. As youth get older the number of members on their
social
networking sites increase.
• Favourite Websites. Rate YouTube, Friv, Google and Bebo as their
favourite
websites.

Dear All,

Just to follow up on David's email - the survey was of 'Youth Access & Usage of Digital Technologies in Butetown, 11-19 year olds specifically. It's only 12 pages, so not long. Provides for some interesting discussion about the common misconception of cash-poor areas being 'excluded' in access/usage of in digital technologies.

No doubt a wider study would reveal more insights into the wider-demographic.
