I've stuck out an early outline for the day. Grateful for input /
suggestions / ideas / changes etc

work.

Thoughts:

We must make clear at the opening that facilities such as community
websites and online activism are *components* of a process that we are
trying to sketch.

The mapping of online networks probably needs to be a separate
focussed piece of work, consequent to an outline map of the community.
is one hour about right for two bits of mapping?

Even though the objective of the day is to design a process, people
will be tempted to discuss existing tools that enable networking of
networks. People will also want to discuss a little what integrating
tools might look like in the future - e.g. online composite blogs or
more user-friendly RSS interfaces. Is this part of Joining the Dots 1?
Or will this push us in to a black hole of discussion around tools,
rather than process? What do you think?

Joining the Dots 2 might throw focus on 'user journeys': e.g. the path
that new online networkers might take over time. and/or what small
scale catalysts might be enabled across time online - e.g. digital
storytelling/Perrin-style activist blogging - that might help support
an increase in the volume of online participation.

What's the key output?

A sketch plan of a process over time?

A series of proposed building blocks/add-ons to existing activity -
i.e. phase two of Butetown.org or an imaginative opening up of
existing activites such as Facebook groups?

A statement from the group on first ideas on how to bridge social
capital through use and development of online social media?

I'm wondering if an hour for mapping both online and offline
communities and examining crossover might be a bit ambitious...

I think discussion of aggregation/tools for drawing together is
inevitable (and I see there have been some helpful links on the Ning
group), but not necessarily unhelpful as long as we're reasonably
disciplined about meeting the objective of the session, which I
understand to be designing a process for linking online and offline
communities over time and allows them to grow as a sort of eco-system
of community networks. Correct me if I've got the wrong end of the
stick!!

I am wondering whether there is space to give some thought to offline
mechanisms for bridging the gaps between networks, while keeping the
overall digital theme. Offline methods might well be the easiest
entry point for new and potential online networkers and may even help
to encourage people through the 90 - 9 - 1 'divides' (i.e. lurking,
editing and creating).

In terms of output what's been suggested looks good - an agreed set of
components that show what actions can be taken to bridge community
networks, ideally in the form of a rough plan. It might also be
helpful to think about the next event and any outcomes we might need
from this session to inform it.

I'm interested in the idea of gaming techniques - what kind of thing
are you thinking of?

Really looking forward to the session

Carrie
