On Friday 4th September, Tom Beardshaw, Carl Morris and me had a
telephone conversation about what might be a next stage of Digital
Butetown, feeding off the ideas raised at the event at the end of
July.

Here's a summary for your comment on what the next stage might look
like:

1. An event.
- October 9th, Banking hall.
- Provisional title: Web Insights and Digital surgery
- A series of presentations/workshops - very practical
demonstrations
- Ideas for topics (& presenters)
- Setting up internet radio (Radio Cardiff)
- Promoting events (Neil Cocker)
- Sharing photos (Dan Green)
- Making videos (Ewan Jones Morris)
- Using the web to learn (Martin Weller or Glyn
Mottershead)
- Hosting a community (NTW/Butetown.org)
- Getting income from music (Carl Morris)
- Setting up a blog (Tom Beardshaw)
- Blogging in the real world (Carl Morris)
- Other ideas: Using mobiles for creating/sharing online,
iPhone tips and apps, sharing music
- All workshops videoed for the web
- Workshop presenters paid small fee to present
- Workshops to run for 45 minutes
- Digital surgery
- Bring your computer and get a web issue sorted with a social
media geek
- Recruit specific Trydan members and Butetown digital people
to contribute
- 30 min slots available at the beginning of the event - as
much as each is willing to contribute
- Book appointments online via simple wiki beforehand and also
on arrival

We will need: Venue, wireless internet
These sessions will be tailored to the audience, spontaneously, to
address real questions and needs.
Speakers will be advised to keep the sessions interactive and respond
to feedback and questions from attendees.

2. Provide bespoke advice for Butetown.org community organizers and
other off- and online organizers who want it
- Initial meeting to sketch out current situation and
aspirations
- Develop strategic ideas, identify software etc.
- Secondary meeting to work through ideas for development

What do you think?

Oct 9th sounds like an excellent event. Don't forget to see if Iain Tweedale can offer someone from his team to help with / do a workshop.
Re the ideas you posted. Yes - we at BBC Wales would certainly be up for looking at how we might work together on / contribute to those - 1 and 2 are particularly interesting. Shall we talk about that when you come in.

Goodness, time has flown and my focus has been elsewhere. How is the
preparation for the event coming on? The outline looks excellent.

Hi there!

The bigger event can't happen yet - there needs to be a bit more
development on the stake and shareholder front and also more
development of the strategic context that would provide opportunities
for effective legacy. Also, the date of an opportunity to discuss an
event with the community collegiately has had to be delayed.

However, it would be useful to this work - and also the British
Council - for a small scale 'seed' event to take place in the near
term.

I have been discussing this offline with Tom Beardshaw, Carl and the
British Council and, as a bit of a seedbed, we are planning to run a
small workshop on 09th October that will provide a surgery for a small
group of 16-18 yr olds from a large local Secondary School and a bit
of one-to-one for Butetown.org and some of the people they are linked
with.

This will *not* take place in the Butetown area but adjacent to an
exhibition currently on show in Cardiff City Centre.

Once we have evaluated the value of this, won some further feedback
and fed this back here, I suspect we will be in a position to build
the right environment for a larger community-driven and community-
needs-driven exercise.

We'll upload an agenda over the next few days. And report back on how
things go on the 9th.

To update you on what's going on:

On Friday, October 9th, Tom Beardshaw and Carl Morris are to run a
workshop at The Old Library, Cardfiff City Centre for:

- Up to 26 x 16-18yr olds from Fitzalan School, studying AS Level
Media.

- A small group of administrators and creatives linked to http://www.butetown.org

This event will be as much as 'needs analysis' as an in-depth 'media
surgery'.

In many ways, an opportunity for us to win a snapshot of 'local
capacity'.
