The main purpose of this project is to develop and deliver a programme
that enables people to use/exploit online social media for the benefit
of their community, should they want/need to.
But it might be worth throwing in to the pot the possible template of
a larger digital initiative that fed off the back of Gavin's post
here, that the two of us discussed yesterday and might act as a
broader, 'digital enabling' platform which an online social media
participation project might plug in to.
Is it worth thinking about digital engagement in the Butetown in the
future within this context?
Or is all of this something totally different: and it's a mistake to
clutter or think about a larger vehicle before we know where the
wheels are?
Below is more Gavin Porter of Community Helps Itself than me...(and
he's happy for me to post):
1) Engage the BBC and other sources of local content to make that
content available so that people can point their mobile telephones at
different places in Butetown and Cardiff Bay and get not just an
information overlay but also historic archive. - i.e. an augmented
reality strand of work.
2) Build on previously (successful) local initiatives that have
encouraged user-generated content, create a second stage of this and
enable Butetown to create a mass self-portrait of itself using
photographs, mobile images etc. Don't just stop at Butetown but 'track
back' to capture other family members in the U.K. and overseas.
Perhaps geographically map this in a way modelled on Twittervision.
http://beta.twittervision.com/
3) Provide existing online social networkers with the resource to
shoot moving footage that reflects their online community life, upload
this to You Tube - or another place - and open-source produce a 'film'
on the social media/communal life of the area. Cut this together with
old black and white documentary films on Butetown/Tiger Bay's historic
offline community life - largely produced by outsiders - and have an
outdoor screening of the end result on a summer evening. Link this
with the idea of Carnival.
4) Use (1), (2) and (3) to create more opportunities for people to
want to engage with the value of digital spaces and share stuff
online. Because there may be people out there who don't want to
community organize online and/or don't see the net as a place for
dealing with powerless-ness or "addressing needs". But they like it as
an entertainment space, like the idea of personalizing that space or
turning it in to a place to store/mess with historical or contemporary
life.
