I'm new to Ottawa, so I have no idea. Is there going to be any kind of rally on parliament hill?

Hey everyone,

Ryan do you know who is organizing the rally in Ottawa on the 26th? From all communication we've see it looks like the petition drive was the only thing being coordinated on Saturday, Feb 26th @ 1pm. If this is the case we'll still need to identify a central meeting location.

Please let us know :)

No worries. So Stop The Meter CRTC petition drive it is! Can anyone suggest a central meeting place for Feb 26th @1pm?

We can help promote far and wide :)

I would assume any location with (1) lot of pedestrian traffic and/or (2)  where the pedestrians are likely to be average to above average users of internet.
For example - employees of government offices, technology company employees, IT enabled service companies, financial service company employees (3) people gathering for weekend activities like Winterlude, Museums, etc

How about The Market? There are a bunch of coffee shops with people using the Internet you could approach.

First off I think we need to know who's going to coordinate this. Lets
not forget that by being organised, this will have grater impact to
the cause.

I agree. Any volunteers for the role of a co-ordinator?

Anyone have any ideas in addition to  us standing around passing flyers?

One idea is participants have their written thoughts (opinons on the subject) read out so that passers by can hear us and also have something for us to do in addition to passing around flyers..
Any comments on if this is workable or not?

I just joined this group, is a rally going to happen? When?

Also, I have been a part of several rallies for the
SouthMarchHighlands-BeaverPond issue, and I know that you need a
"Special Events Permit" from the city of Ottawa, but if it is public
property, you are allowed (for a certain amount of time).

I may be able t join if I know a date.

Folks, this link here says there needs to be a Special Events Permit from the City of Ottawa at least 28 days prior to the event.

Hey everyone,

Just a quick summary for everyone who just joined this Stop The Meter - Ottawa google group today. There is a national Stop The Meter day of action Saturday, February 26th @1pm. Most communities are organizing a Stop The Meter CRTC petition drive. The main goal is to hit the pavement and help educate the general public that the CRTC is currently reviewing usage based billing (UBB) which would make Internet in Canada less affordable, and less accessible.

We are encouraging Stop The Meter supporters in Ottawa to determine a central location to meet on the 26th at 1pm. From there you can walk around in teams of two or three and ask Canadians to sign the petition calling on the CRTC to Stop The Meter and end Internet caps. We will help invite your local media. Once you're done we're asking one point person to collect the petitions and mail them back to the OpenMedia office. We will then input the names as comment to the CRTC.

Hope this helps clarify where things are currently at :)

For the Internet,

Nothing stops us to do this in a mall. As long as we get the ok from
the mall.

Meeting this weekend centrally would work best for everyone I assume..

Just as a resource please find attached the planning meeting minutes from Stop The Meter - Montreal. They had a meeting tonight to discuss strategies for their petition drive next Saturday, as well as a general discussion on open, accessible, and affordable Internet policy in the long-term.

One idea maybe to cover as many internet cafe's as possible and if you
want media attention a main group could meet in the market area by
CJOH TV where there are many radio stations there as well.

This could be more effective if we 'borrowed' this idea from the montreal group:

Hand out symbolic tickets or fines for excessive usage as a creative action

Give them to anyone we see using a laptop, listening to an iPod, really anyone who looks like a 'heavy' internet user.

If we want to move forward with this idea, I can start work on a design and submit it to the group for approval..

This is great!

If you're able to come up with a "Internet Usage Ticket" design with Stop The Meter info, a link to www.OpenMedia.ca/CRTC, etc we can share it nationally :)

ps. depending on what time on Sunday I might be able to attend :)

Upwards and onwards!

The Montreal minutes gave some really good ideas. If we are going to
do up mock-tickets for fines then someone should probably start on
that soon, it is going to require some design/printing time.

I just joined the (Google) group today but I am itching for ways to
participate more and more. I was at the Ottawa protest on February 5th
but the amount of people who showed up was disappointing (we had about
500 people confirmed on Facebook, and about 40 people actually
showed). I think if we coordinate this properly and make efforts to
get organized we can make a stronger impact.

I know you need permits to be in certain places, but only for extended
periods of time. And why not march? I'm sure you guys know how much
attention the Zombie Walk gets, why don't we move around? I mean, we
could stop at key areas for brief periods of time (half an hour, an
hour, whatever), but wouldn't movement help our cause? Get us seen by
more people? Plus it would make it easy for people to join us and
leave us without our numbers crumbling; people without money or easy
transportation could meet up with us at certain points of the route,
as long as we had a core group. Anyway, just a suggestion.

And I totally love the idea of hitting up internet cafes and the like.
I know quite a few people who frequent internet cafes because they
can't afford their own internet regularly, and obviously if UBB goes
through... well... we all know what will happen then. I agree about
anyone with a laptop or iPod as well. Rideau could be a great place to
start if we can get permission from the mall: with the Apple Store
alone I'm sure we could get a bunch of support.

If there's anything I can do to get any wheels in motion, let me know!
I am ready and willing!

I think we should, personally. I like the idea of dressing up - not
necessarily full costumes, but maybe one or two items to make it clear
we're not just people walking around. I don't know what the theme
should be... I know OpenMedia suggested Meter Maid outfits, which
would be hilarious but hard to aquire/pull off.

So I've done up a quick design for the "Data Usage Infraction" tickets. I've based the layout roughly on the City of Ottawa parking tickets, hopefully this will help them make an impact.

The main idea behind the ticket is that it can be used to engage the individual and start a discussion about their personal internet habits and how the legislation under review will effect them. The issuing 'officer' will get the name of the 'offender' and based on their internet habits (over)estimate an additional per-gigabyte charge. Personally I feel that this will not only make a great prop when engaging the public, but a personalized piece always seems to be much more effective than just throw-away flyers.

I think it would be positive to make the actual ticket itself bilingual, however, as my french is barely even up to a grade 9 standard, I'm asking someone in this group to translate the attached text document and send it back to me so I can complete the layout of the ticket. Also attached is the current work in progress of the ticket. Essentially the layout will not change, just the french content will be added to mirror the english (like on our parking tickets). It is sized to fit 3 up on a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet so it can easily be reproduced on a home printer. If the design meets everyone's approval I can also submit one without the ottawa logo to openmeter.ca for use in other municipalities.

If anyone has any comments, suggestions, or criticism, please don't hesitate to contact me directly or just reply here.

Thanks,

Moving forward, I've removed the logos in question and used google translate on a few of the blurbs. Still hoping to get a real-live francophone to help out with the trickier bits.

I was concerned about the trademark issues as well, best we just avoid that whole situation.

Just an update on the tickets. Please find attached the current version with the questionable logos removed and the city's name in a generic font. Will be making one of these for a list of canadian cities and they will be distributed by OPENmedia so that's kind of neat.

Still looking to get what I did translate to french via google proof-read, and the remainder of the content translated by the end of day today / early tomorrow so I can get the files sent out.

Richard, this looks so amazingly great it's not even funny!

Thank you so much.

Do you think we could make The Meters and "Digital Usage Infraction" slightly larger/more prominent?

Nick Salter with Stop The Meter - Montreal is working on the French translation.

What's the dimension of the file? Would you be able to add two onto the same page so we could simply print and then cut the pages? Everyone is thinking about printing the page in pink :)

Thanks again,

Also, is there any way of creating one high resolution in colour as well?

We might want to make some (normal sized) posters and even encourage people to use it as their FB avatars.

They are very nice but without proper organisation, there no point to
march out and prove our point. For the last time, weekend meeting,
who's in or out. Time is running out and I won't put my business name
at an unorganised event.

I don't ask much, just to be organised. I have to drive 35 mins to get
to Ottawa and I'm willing to do it. Most of you already live in
Ottawa... Hope you get my point.

I'll be on a flight to NYC at that time unfortunately. So I will be unable to attend anything until the 25th. I will be staying in touch via email as much as possible.

I can however make the requested changes to the ticket. The dimensions are 3.66 x 8.5, it was designed so that 3 would fit easily on an 8.5x11 sheet. Waiting on the translation only.

Hope you guys and/or gals get something organized. I'll be there in spirit.
