Dear Internet Ambassadors,

Thank you for joining OpenMedia.ca's Digital Action Team - Edmonton organizing committee. We are in the process of gearing up for a coordinated Stop The Meter national day of action on Saturday, February 26th. As you have probably heard, because of the public backlash the CRTC has been forced to review its decision to allow usage-based-billing (UBB). They have opened up this review process to public consultation. We see this as a great opportunity to continue to call on Ottawa to Stop The Meter. In a few short weeks we've won some big battles but this isn't over yet.

Our two main campaign goals over the coming weeks are as follows:

1) Encouraging all Canadians to sign our online petition targeted to the CRTC: www.openmedia.ca/crtc
2) Organizing local Stop The Meter on-the-ground petition drives. On February 26th Canadians in over 20 communities will walk around coffee shops, campuses, and street corners asking everyone they meet to help us ensure internet access in Canada is open, accessible and affordable. Those who sign the petition locally will be added to the growing community of Canadians who have called on Ottawa to Stop The Meter and end internet caps.

We will also formally submit comments to the CRTC on behalf those who sign the on-the-ground petition.

We're going to be using Edmonton Digital Action Team google group as the forum to encourage local participation in the Stop The Meter campaign. If you know anyone in your local community interested in being involved, please feel free to add them to this group. In the meantime, we at OpenMedia.ca will continue to invite volunteers to join this local organizing team through Facebook, Twitter, and our email lists.

ACTION: If you are interested in taking on a local leadership role and would like to join OpenMedia's National Stop The Meter conversation please let me know and I will add you. Currently, we would like to identify one point-person per local organizing team.

To help get the juices flowing, I will be circulating a "Stop The Meter - Petition Drive Tips" document in the coming days.

For the Internet,

Hello,

I was wondering if there was any official word on where the Edmonton
event would be occurring? I have seen a few mentions of the ledge
grounds, but nothing official from the group. I am interested in
attending, possibly get a few friends to join me, but am not
interested in a leadership role at this time.

Hey Stop the Meter - Edmonton,

The petition drive next Saturday will be straight forward. We're encouraging local supporters to print off the Stop The Meter CRTC petition, meet at some central location (a coffee shop, campus, library) etc. and walk around and ask Canadians to help us call on Ottawa to Stop The Meter on Internet use!

Most local groups are meeting around 1pm, Saturday February 26th to kick-off their local petition drive.

We can help you promote once a meeting place/time is determine. We can also help out by inviting your local media - so they can see Stop The Meter in action :)

Please feel free to bounce some ideas around about a local meeting time/place :)

For the Internet,

Glyn

We are pushing towards the legislature grounds, I'll be making this
announcement on the main facebook page as soon as we talk to the ledge
and make arrangements.

Just a quick update on Edmonton's Stop the Meter action. We are going
ahead with the rally. It's what we committed to in the beginning and
it's what our local supporters are expecting. I just got off the
phone with the office of Brian Mason, MLA (NDP) and his guy said that
contacting the Council of Canadians would be a good idea as they might
be interested in participating. Our goal for the day is to contact
the Alberta Legislature grounds and let them know of our intent to
hold a rally at 1pm on February 26. After that, we will begin putting
together a press release for local media. We are continuing our
search for local speakers, and are struggling to think of ways to
include other Albertans in the rally if they can't make it to
Edmonton.
